Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
Normally I would do this at a TA meeting. It has been pointed out on another thread that there are lots of new faces here now. So lets all say hey and give a little info on who we are and why we are here.
I'm John and I am a tunaholic. I owe my saltwater addiction to Salty Dog #1, Puffin. Seems like the ocean has always been a part of my life but Puffin got me into it here on the left coast when he convincd me that the 'Pilar' was worthy for briny pursuits.
Thanks Bro.
And thanks to all of you who make this an easy place to fish. It amazes me on a daily basis how tight this group is and how quickly it grows. Watching all of you work together and support each other is one of the major joys in my life.
We no longer fish on 'Pilar' the boat now belongs to 'Lingslayer'. May she have many safe and happy trips with my old friend. 'Kismet' is the new ride and we hope to cause a disturbance in the force with that fine boat this summer. She is slowly, methodically, getting the extras she needs to become a fisher as well as a looker.
TUNA! is almost here and I can begin to feel the carking endorphins kicking in.
Sincerely,
Pilar, Ifish member #270

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
I can claim with pride that I am a member of the pack. TUNA! and I are "blood brothers" and I can't wait to see my "brothers" again this summer. Thanks for starting this thread, John

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
One of the nicest things about the "Dogs" is the relationships that develop ashore based on common interest, that carry over onto the brine - sharing locations, plans and knowledge, then following through by keeping an eye on the pack while out playing in Neptune's yard. While there's no substitute for personal preparation and sufficiency, having a Dog on your wing can bring an added level of security when needs arise.
My left coast, over the horizon adventures were ignited by Miss B Haven several years ago on her maiden tuna-venture. The thrill continues to build. But, as a vessel-impaired crewman, my pursuits are more limited than I'd like. I'm good for near shore trolling, trapping and bouncing in my boat ... but the draw of the horizon is strong. I yearn for a barn door to call my own.

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
I'm Bret and I grew up on the freshwater oceans of the Great Lakes. You might also notice from my moniker and TUNAvatar that I'm a Zappa fan and a freedive enthusiast. I've always been a fish-a-holic, just never realized that my true destiny was to become a TUNA!holic. Once moving here five years ago it was only a matter of time before I discovered this board and the likes of Pilar, Puffin, Corrirod, Taylor's Viewpoint, Aquaholic, Miss B and many others turned me into a demented hell-bent full-fledged salty freak. On my last trip I combined bottom fishing, clamming and free diving into 7 hours. Always up for a salty adventure.
Oh yeah! How can I forget Keta.

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
This is Robin and this is my Bio. I have been a steady Salty Dog for the last four years. In 2004 I became a Tuna Capton, 2000 a Halibut Capton. Back in 1974 I would take a 16 ft. Skaget out fot bottom fish and salmon. Limited on ocean knowledge I would not venture out very far and only in the best of conditions. I now own a 26 ft. Criss Craft which I have recently outfitted to travel to the tuna grounds as a decent fishing vessle. I moor the Boat, Lady Irish at Newport during the summer months. Newport is our favorite port town and our favorite port. Member no. 2070

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
My name is Paul and I'm a developing Salty Dog. Can't say I'm a tunaholic yet as I'm still a TUNA! virgin. I hope to change that soon.
I've been visiting with Reelcreel (Perry) to get squared away on some starter gear for TUNA! so at least when a seat opens up I got some gear and a clue on how to rig it. I purchased a Shimano TLD-20 and a sturdy stick, so I should have the rod part covered.
Everyone has been really patient with my lack of knowledge, incessant questioning, and my rookie salty status. Thanks for being a such a generous bunch!
I own a 20' Trophy walkaround (Spindrifter) and I hope to get out in the salt after I get some experience from the other dogs.
John any help you need working on Kismet just give me a shout.
Hope to see you at the next TA meeting or out on the salt, take care. Spin

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
Hi my name is Ron
I am an import from So Cal. and I must say finding this forum has changed my life. I have lived on the Pacific ocean recreationally and profesionally for the last 30 years. I can't remember my first salt water fish, I have been told it was a hali when I was three. After the Navy moved me up here I was lost. Sorry to you natives, but bouncing a big chunk of led 200ft under water is NOT the same as flylining a chovie in order to do battle with a demon. I enjoy both, but my heart is in the topwater action. Then, last year about this time I read that you could catch albacore out of Ilwaco, with live bait just like we do back home. As it happened I had an opportunity to purchase an apropriate boat for the endevor, a 22ft Wellcraft, around this time. I called the WDFW and they told me to do a search for the SALTY DOGS at Ifish. The operation Jenny has put together here is just amazing, it has made me a happy man. Now I can love where I live AND how I fish. I do go bottom fishing alot, but come June, I will be making the trip to Ilwaco repeatedly and do what I truly love. So thanks guys, thanks for the GPS numbers, the tackle recomendations, the humor, and the friendship. I learned what the word shipmate means in the navy, and I count each and every one of you as one of mine.
Ron

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
I am, as my user name implys, puffins crew. Big Jon has been my neighbor for the last 25 years. His love for fishing is addictive. I have been fishing on Jon's last three ocean going boats many times.
Thanks to Puffin, I now have have many thousands of dollars worth of diffrent types of tackle, rain gear, hand held VHF and even bought a small boat of my own.
I so enjoy the people I have met and get to go fishing with because of this forum.
These are the good old days.
IFISH ROCKS!!
A very special thanks Jennie for supporting the Salty Dogs.
Peace, Tom

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
My name is Aaron and I'm a TUNA-holic by association. I've never actually been TUNA fishing, but the stories and pics from the group have definitely got me amped up and ready to go.
I've been involved in water sports and fishing all my life. My family has owned PWCs, ski-boats, and roof-top fishing boat since I'm able to remember. I finally bought my first seaworthy vessel at age 23(last august) and I am now hopelessly addicted to the brine. Freshwater is just a waste of time until the ocean lays down... I've probably logged 20-25 round trips out of T-bay over the last 9 months, and after a few trips in other's boats, I will be ready for my own TUNA trip. Stay Tuned.
Yes, I am a salty dog.

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
My name is John and I'm a TUNAholic and Salty Pup. Grew up an army brat up and down the east coast. Always had a fishing jones and any time I got close to the coast I had to book an ocean charter. Moved out here a dozen years ago and the first summer I booked a TUNA! trip out of Depoe. Weather was too rough and we turned back after a couple miles. Can't imagine where I would be now if I had caught the TUNA! disease back then. Fast forward 10 years and I find this board....... nothing like it on the web.....You sure know how to get a guy worked up! Look forward sharing some rides supplemented by some charters. See you at the carking station!

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
It is kind of interesting to look back. I was member #133 and it was about 4 or 5 years ago. Now there must be about 10,000 members.....amazing.
I have stayed on the Ifish board for one reason......."the people".
I would probably never run as far off shore, or atleast as often if it were not for the friends on the water. It is not only about the safety factor, but the whole fishing experience is more enjoyable sharing it with the Guys and Gals of Ifish.
I also enjoy the different opinions shared on subjects. I have learned a lot from all of you.

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
I am a Salt water fishing fanatic. I grew up in Reedsport fishing the ocean, and have continued to do so for the past 35 years. I recently added a more salty boat to the fleet( 26' Maxweld). I am currently moored at Girabaldi, but will move the boat down to Newport in July. Hope to be chasing the Tuna with the crowd.

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
Hi, my name is Jamie and I am a Salty Dog. I started on fresh water at 6 in my kayak, but became addicted to the salt at 16 out of Brookings when a limit of rockfish was 15 and no license was required. My first salty catch was a 24lb ling, thus the moniker.
That was many, many years ago and I finally have returned after a number of years of forced hiatus.
As we learn the ropes and our boat, my crew (also known as Austin :smile and I are expanding our salty pursuits. Through the stories shared here we have caught the dreaded TUNA! disease and hope to share a story or two of our own before this season is over.
Stay tuned,...
Jamie

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
My name is John, I went springer fishing on the Columbia a couple of years ago with two guys named Pilar and Puffin. The stories they told on the boat that day opened up my eyes to the possibilities of the big blue.
A couple of months later, I took my first venture out into the Salt.
They say the first one gets you hooked for life !
This was aboard the mighty Pilar. I knew then that any other kind of fishing was just going to be dissapointing.
The last couple of years I've met some great Salty Dogs who've all been hospitable, polite, and generous.
Looking forward to a great Summer guys !!!

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
Two years ago I got a phone call at 9:30 PM. It was Miss Behaven (Mel) asking me if I wanted to go tuna fishing in the morning. Could I be in Warrenton at 4:00 AM? No problem, say I. I caught my first tuna that day and look forward to that kind of action again and again. I have been fishing the salt water for 35 years. I take my boat out for everything except tuna, so I am a tuna ho and I can be had on very short notice. I'm not as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I ever was.

Re: Roll Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
My name is Tom, and I'm a Salty Dog!
I started ocean fishing for salmon while very young out of Winchester Bay. I was instantly "hooked for life". Since then, I have fished out of Newport, Depoe Bay, Nehalem Bay, Garibaldi, Illwaco, Chinook, Warrenton, and Astoria. Not all bars are as friendly as Newport, but all of those bars have been crossed safely and succesfully many times. Is it just me, or does the Columbia River bar go on FOREVER!!!
Meeting new friends and learning via the Salty Dog board has opened up many new horizons. I haven't met a single Salty Dog that I wouldn't consider family. This truly is a treasure trove of information, mucho sharing, caring for others safety, and fun fun fun.
Thanks to Jen, Ifish.net, all the Dogs, and the USCG.

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
My name is John and I too am a Salty Dog...
My introduction to fishing was (shhh...don't tell anyone) in Southern California pier fishing among the bums. I remember riding the bus down to Huntington Beach pier on a Friday night when I was 12 (about 40 miles), fishing rod in hand, to catch (what I thought at that time) were monsters. By the time I could drive, I fished every charter out of Redondo and Laguna beach that I could afford. I couldn't imagine a life, for me anyways, without fishing. If fishing were banned tomorrow I'd still do it, no matter the consequences even if I had to do it at night with a pitchfork.
My introduction to this board was from way back when Pilar (John) still posted on the old Yahoo board. In the years since I've had the great pleasure (and I don't use that word lightly) of meeting and spending time with a number of the Salty Dogs, and can honestly say that this group, as a whole, represents the best that life has to offer. Sharing, honesty, arguments (sometimes friendly?), information and strength. Truly a group that is far more than the sum of it's parts.
From the boat rides that I've been offered (Thanks...Pilar, Mr. Fisherman, NorRivDave, Nalu, etc...) To the wealth of information that has been shared. It's all been very much appreciated and has made this one guy's life all the better.
Fishing for me is about the challenges and the learning. If all I wanted was to eat fish I'd get them at Lake Albertsons. Instead I've chosen to go out and chase the critters on a level that rewards trial and error. This is what (I believe) sets the Salty Dogs apart. We don't always win, but we never really lose because we keep coming back.
Thanks to all....see ya' on the water.
Them TUNAS! are just about due...

Re: Roll Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
Fishing has been a pastime of mine since I was a little kid and that was over 50 years ago. I'm still addicted to steelhead, salmon, halibut and ALIBES. Drift boats, jet sleds and power boats have enabled me to fish different areas. I've owned many boats over my years and still can't get the perfect one. I'll always be trying. I've attended Salty Dogs meetings, met new people and enjoyed them all. I wish I had more time to devote to my addiction of chasing Albies. It's always a memory to take off in the predawn hours, heading west, mist on the boat, looking back and seeing that big old globe rise against the terra firma you launched from. Still gives me the shivers.
I have a couple famous quotes that are stuck to my monitor:
"It isn't that life ashore is distasteful to me. But life at sea is Better!" -Sir Francis Drake
and another:
"To ensure safety at sea, the best that science can devise and that naval organizations can provide must be regarded only as an aid, and never as a substitute for good seamanship, self-reliance and the sense of ultimate responsibility, which are the first requisites in a seaman and naval officer." -Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, U.S. Navy.
I appreciate being a "Salty Dog" and knowing others and getting to know new Dogs.

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
Have fished ever sence I was old enough to support my habbit.
My dad was a hunter and fisherman so we were introduced to the outdoors when we were young, large family 5 boys 2 girls most of us are very much still hunters and fishers including sister.
For many years it was for me lakes, rivers and a charter when I could afford a trip.
The salt for me was always more fun than fresh water and the fish were bigger.
Back Back when the limit on bottom fish was 25 and as I remember limit on salmon was 3 takeing a charter just wasn`t working for me anymore they came back to soon I wanted more time on the water.
Thats when I decided I had to have my own boat, go when I want stay as long as I want.
First boat was a 19ftr worked ok if I picked my days.
What a learning curve that was where to go and how to gear up when you are on a charter all that is done for you.
And all this before the internet or ifish didn`t even own a computer then.
Then got a bigger boat what a difference dryer and softer ride a cabin with a head wife realy likes that.
And then I found ifish what a great source of information and I am still learning.
Thank you Salty Dogs.

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
Tuna Tom here,
I started hand-lining for cod off the coast of Nova Scotia when I was seven years old. I can still remember crying for someone to come help me with the line. I was told "you hooked it. You pull it in". I never let go and the rest is history.
Folks that fish with me know I kinda like to jig for ALL fish...especially TUNA.
My fishing these days has changed just a bit, thanks to little Tommy Tuna being born almost three years ago. Hey, he reeled in a shad over at OC last weekend. It was a "beeg fith".
Thanks!! to ALL the Salty Dogs for being such great friends. It is important for my survival to be in-touch with people the really have no control over their addiction.

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
Been on boats as long as I can remember and thats from about the mid-forties. might have about 100,000 miles on big blue on everything from trollers to draggers, tugs to navy ships and then onto my own boats. Been hanging around here since the yahoo days, the reason being that I still learn something from this fine board. I guess I would call myself a Old Salt, but still a pup in some ways....Roger
P.S. thanks to all for the great info....

HellOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOO DOGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Name name is Troy... aka Ragnar the Berserker.
I've been know to roll around in fish or fish guts in my lava-lava or Rockit suit-Is that wrong? (just like Demi Moore in "Indecent Proposal" except she rolled around in money-we see where her priorities are...).
Anyway.
I am also regarded as a cutting edge-pioneer in the "very organic marine high fashion world." Perhaps you have heard of TUNA!-Hats? It's all the rage on the runways of Milan dar-LING!
I also specialize in jewelery.... Boat jewelery that is.
I little weld here... A little weld there...
Sharp-pointy-hook-shaped things attached to long poles are one of my turn-ons.
I am also have a $20-$30 a day SUSHI habit.
I've been really bad.
Today I need to accept myself for who and what I am...
I am a Berserker... And I'm Okay with that!
I like me. I'm good enough.. I'm smart enough... And Dawg-gonnit... People like me too!
Okay okay... I now too much info.....
Well... I'm outta here

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
When mommas water broke she had to walk down to the river and get dad to quit fishing long enough to take her (and soon to be me) to the hospital. On the way to the hospital they hit a 4 point buck and had to borrow a neighbors gun to finish off the crippled buck.
I think I had fishing and hunting in my blood from an early stage
It took me a long time to get a my own salty boat, but so far I am pretty happy with it.

My name is Jarrett and I am a Salty Dog. I found Ifish doing a halibut search on the internet one day and have never looked back. I started out on the salt when I was about 13 fishing with Dad out of Depoe Bay in our 16' Seaswirl and only a CB. Since then I have grown and so has our boat size and our equipment. No place I'd rather be than on the Ocean or near it. Haven't bloodied myself with with tuna blood yet, but I look forward to it maybe this year. I really appreciate the info that all the dogs share and in return I try to reveal a little knowledge that I may have. Maybe a TA meeting newbie one of these days.

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
My name is Ryan, I was born in Coos Bay and my old man was a river/salt water fishing addict and so he did his best to raise his 3 boys the same way. Needless to say, I grew up fishing the south coast and for the past 30+ years have made many salty trips and memories and look forward to making many, many more with my family and friends.
Am I a salty dog? Depends on the criteria by which it is measured. I've never made a living on the ocean, mainly because I never wanted to earn a living from something that I love to do for recreation, much like guiding. I always thought if I did it for a living, then what would I do on my days off? No doubt, work my @ss of getting ready for the next trip, with no time for my family. I would say because I love to do it recreationally then that makes me one.
I've only been taking advantage of the this huge resource on ifish a short time compared to most but I've really enjoyed the stories, information and humility shared by all and look forward to the future. The internet has revolutionized the world and the sport fishing industry is no exception. Thanks Jenny for your creation.

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
Hi, I'm Mike and I love to fish!
I have fished in the salt in many places around the world for over 40 years. I enjoy being on the water and fish anytime my other commitments allow me to. Catching is also a big plus.
Through the help of coworkers and friends I have met on this forum, I have learned of many new ways to spend large sums of money to hunt fast tasty fish.
I am a TUNA!holic and have no desire to be cured.

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
I've been fishing the salt off of Oregon since shortly after I could walk and have also fished my boat for tuna in the Atlantic and out of Hawaii. The Salty Dogs are a great group, even though I have never personally met any of them, I have received a lot of valuable information. I hope one day to return to Oregon and contribute back as much as I have received.
Lately my boat has spent more time in storage than in the water and my view has been more like this:
But I hope to return from the sand to the salt one day. In the meantime I enjoy reading the stories and seeing the pictures from the best salt water fishing board on the net.

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
Great thread Pilar. Hopefully everyone will post so we can get a head count.
My name is Damon and I am a computer geek by trade. That is where Megabites comes from. I have fished all my life but was introduced to the ocean a few years back by Hook-up and Serious Fun. They have been chasing Tuna in the NW for something like 10 years and spend a great deal of time in the ocean each year. I owe my salt addiction to them. A close second is the Salty Dogs. Even though I have met few of you in person it is cool to have this level of conversation and trust.

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
I'm Laurence. Like many of you I grew up in SoCal and fished the back bays for sand bass and bay bass in 12 and 14' valcos dad bought for us. Heck, I'd team up with another buddy or two and even float tube the bays. We also spent our time on cattleboats and small charters. Now, my brother fishes theos crazy Kayak tourneys down there...NO MOTORS in the Big Blue
Anyway, I thought most my fishing was done until last year I learned that TUNA! were up here. So, I talked my buddy into taking his 22' Trophy out and now he, PoiDog, is hooked too. This year I hope to show him the real fun in flylining live bait and casting to these beasts...Fish On will have a whole new meaning for him when this happens!!
Hopefully we'll meet up with other WA folks running outta Ilwaco several times this season!
I love this place and everyone's committment ot helping each other enjoy fishing to the fullest extent possible! Thanks Jennie

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
Yes, I am a Salty dog. My first ocean adventure was when I was about 5 years old. My dad and I went out to buoy 10 with his friend Wilcox. I landed the first Coho and I can still remember being almost too tiered to reel it all the way in. Since then I have seen this fine group coalesce. Tuna blood is addicting and can't wait for a fine frenzy this summer.

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
My name is Roger and I've been a saltwater fisherman since
I was old enough to handle a fishing rod. I've fished the
big blue on both sides of this great land of ours and I
really appreciate this forum and it's members. Fish talk is freely spoken here and the wealth of local knowledge is outstanding. The desire to share that knowledge and the fishing experienced has really hooked me on this group. Cheers to those of you I've already met and to those of you who I've yet to meet. I'll see you all on the fishing grounds........Triple C

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
I grew up down south and started fishing the piers as well. I remember when they stuck us in our little red wagon (right after the wheel was invented)and getting up at O'dark:30 and casting a few. In between casts we sipped on hot chocolate. Kept at it ever since. . It was just a part of life or living . There was days when the bite wasn't there and we went on the beach and tied kites to our fishing rods. Boy you talk about fighting a big one, specially on a windy day. Anyway did a lot of scuba diving before transplanting up here. Now it's with rods again and on boats instead of piers and going after much bigger fish. I have Really enjoyed the comradery of the dogs and have learned bunches. Thanks to all the dogs

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
My name's Dan and I've fished for steelhead and salmon for over thirty years. Progressed from bank maggot,to drift boat, to jetsled, and soon to a Seahawk. Last summer Kenai ask me if I would like to fish for some butts, and Tuna out of Newport. It was so cool to be 40 miles out in the ocean, no crowds. Didn't find the Tuna that day but found a new challenge. The ocean scares me and draws me at the sametime.

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
My name is Margaret and I've always been drawn to the sea. Grew up in SF Bay Area and had my first deep sea fishing trip at age 9 out of Guaymas. After catching 2 sharks and a barracuda I was hooked from then on! Explored sailing, scuba'ing and finally ended up in oceanography as a career. Have been at OSU for 25 yrs and am fortunate to have travelled to many exotic places and gotten paid for it! Found the Salty Dogs through a friend, Aye Fsh, whom I've had many salty adventures with. My partner and I currently have a 20' SeaPro glass boat with a 190hp Chevy Vortec i/o V6. Have been going out of Newport for several years and am just now getting comfortable driving it as far as the Chicken Ranch. Not enough fuel capacity for tuna unfortunately. Have met a few Salty Dogs and look forward to meeting more! Very comforting knowing y'all are out there if we should need assistance/advice. Great dog kennel here on ifish! Everyone is sooooo nice! Kinda restores one's faith in humanity!

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
My name is Dennis and I have been a Salty drowned Dog for 50 years. My family has been in commercial fishing forever dating back to 1917 out of Newport, and the Columbia river.
I have seen and been in Northwestern Storms that put gray hairs where they don't belong. I have lost family members to old Blue and have come close one time to meeting her myself.
Fishing is my love and chasing Salmon,Halibut and Tuna is all I think about.
Love meeting new people and enjoying their company.
Newport is my main base, staying at the South Beach RV park when I'm in town. My boat name is Fish Tales and she is a 2052 Trophy. Lookin forward to meeting you all. God Bless and keep a tight line.

My name is Doug and I am a Tunaholic. Actually, I am a "pelagaholic," as I love to fish for all things pelagic. I grew up in Huntington Beach, California, and had ample opportunity to Marlin fish there and south of there. my affinity for billfish explains the name, no?
Anyway, I am a proud member of the Salty Dogs, and have the boat "Stick Time." Look for me on 78.

Love your tagline. There is no qualification to become a Salty Dog. All you need is a love for the sea and the will to pursue it.
As Popeye said to me one day

Truer words were never spoken. All of us are going to be learning every time we go out. The cool thing is that some of the learning can happen here wth little or no risk and almost no consequence for getting it wrong.

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
My name is Dave, I love to fish. Got started on the East coast fishing at Grandfather's lake fishing for bass, bluegill, and pickerel. Later moved to Newport, R.I., and bridge and pier fished for blue fish and whatever else there was.
As a teen my family moved to So. Cal. We lived aboard a sailboat for a few years and I always dragged a lure while cruising. Caught some bonito, barracuda, and even a small mako shark from the back of my dad's sailboat.
I met some kid's at school who loved the salt and had boats. I fished Santa Monica bay for years for many different species.
After I got out of the Army, I moved to Tacoma, where I have been since 1986. It took me a while to get going on the fishing thing here, but after a few years, I got a small boat and started fishing the Sound.
3 years ago, I joined a group calld the Puget Sound Anglers. That was the best move I have ever made. I have met so many great people and shared so many experiences that I consider myself to be very fortunate.
Off shore salmon trolling, mooching, to near shore bottom fish to halibut. The big thing I am missing is the tuna experience.
I can't wait until this summer when I hope to catch a ride to Tuna Town.

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
HI My name is Dick and I am an OLD dog. 75yrs that is.
I have been fishing the salt all my life. As a very young kid I would be out on the barges from San Pedro getting what would be our table fair for the next week or so.
I have been on hundreds of party boats and many long range boats out of San Diego. The largest game fish is a 162# Yellow Fin tuna.
I am now the owner of an 18.5 ft. Seaswirl WA cuddy. It is well equiped with a 130 Evinrude and 9.9 4-stroke kicker on a hyd lift and remote throttle. Electronics is a Raymarine C-80 system and Raymarine autopilot.
This is not a Tuna boat but its good for Halibut, Salmon and bottom fish. The love of the sea has caused me to buy a beach home in Newport and I keep the boat there. I spend about half my time in Newport and when the weather permits, I am out there.
Looking forward to meetin many of you and hope to see you on the brine. If you see Cloud-Nine out there give a holler on 78.
Thanks Dick

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
My name is Dylan and im a Salty Addict. I am indebted to the salty dogs, i lost my halinity thanks to Dean aboard the Aqua-holic, and thanks to Rick for setting me up with a ride with Dan, lost my ablinity that day, went out in the beginning of June last yr, and had a 25+ fish day, not bad for being the second boat out that yr, besides pilar who had gotten one fish No offense there, but we think your gonna catch the first reel BFT or Swordie aboard the Kissmet. I have been very fortunate to expierence the wonderful salty fishing we have on this planet, fished in Cabo, PV,Kona, Maui, San Juan, St Thomas, Cape May, and Montauk. It took me awhile to believe that we had TUNA in our backyards. Now im a full fledged salty addict. Can't wait for the TUNA season to start boiling..
See ya'll by the sea..

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
I'm a Salty Dog... My first trip was when I was young out of Depoe Bay. All I remember is tossing breakfast all morning. In high school I spent three summers gillnetting salmon in Cook Inlet prior to the Exxon Valdez spill. Now I am hooked up with a great bunch on Ifish. My long time hunting buddy, Puffin, got me interested in the salt once again. I can't thank him or the rest of you guys enough.
Please check out my ad above.

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
My name is Ken, & I'm a "fishaholic", I fish mostly in saltwater, due to the many habit forming fish avaliable, but my addiction does not stop there, I will use any fish to feed my addiction, as long as they fight good, are abundant & or are good eating. I believe I'm a true "salty dog" even tho I get sea sick, since I have one of the smallest boats(19' customweld) that rountinely runs out 30+ miles in search of Halibut , & Tuna to feed my addiction

Bill here from down Lakeside way. I'm a newcomer to the Dogs but have been fishing the salt for the past 5 years from Tillamook Bay to Coos Bay. I still work 40 hours a week unless the ocean is flat. The "CARRIE LOUISE" is my current ride, a 24' SeaSport with diesel power. Good to be part of a group that looks out for one another.

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
Hello my name is Chancel lor,
I've met a few Salty Dogs on the board at TA meetings and the newport dock, what a great bunch of folks.
I'm originally from Houston, Tx where during my youth we made many trips to Galveston piers, jettys, and other bank spots for inshore fish. I moved to Oregon in 1996 and first ventured into the Ocean in 1997 on Charter in Depoe Bay. I was hooked to this Ocean thing in 1997 when I got my first taste of White Gold on a charter. Booked a tuna trip the following year, but due to weather reasons, we never left the dock.
I consider myself a Salty pup(until I get a boat),bonafide tuna virgin, and a boat ho, hoping to catch a Tuna this summer.

I AM A SALTY DOG!!! I have pics of my mom holding me oneish on the boat while dad pulled lobster pots (east coast)for a brief while...
I started fishing here when I finally got out of the nav and got a real job with time off... met Capin dan and found ourselves drawn inexplicably to the blue.... then Ifish came along and fueled it even further... lots of new good friends in the last few years... many more to come.

My name is Hans and love to fish for salmon and bottom fish. I'm a TUNA virgin fishing mainly out of the Columbia River and Grays Harbor.
I'm here because I like the idea of having a great community on the water , to share experiences, also to learn more about TUNA! (Might have to get a boat with more range:grin
Thanks go out to the great people I've met, and hope to be able to support you as best as possible.

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
I know I can be "gamey" but I am not so sure about "salty". My wife and the love of my life (Catcher)says I am a dog, for sure  I fish a 20' Hewescraft that I have set up for albacore but that fishes the other coastal species well also. I am old, slow, and fat but I have enthusiasm! My boat is the "Tantrum" and I will leave it to any of my crew to explain that!
I occasionally take a new victim out with me from the board. I have been the recipient of a ton of help and information from the real "dogs" here. This board has re-kindled my fire for salty activities, or readicted me!
The people I have met and fished with here have restored my faith in humanity. Now that I am retired, I will be able to fish weekends and hopefully get to know more of the dogs personally.
This will be my last season on the left coast for a while, so say "hi" if you get a chance
Scaup, Thank you, and the rest of our armed forces, for contributing to the safety of this great country and our ability to freely pursue our personal passions
A special THANKS! to the real "Salty Dogs", our USCG team...the very best partners I can imagine!
I am Dave, and I am a tunaholic

Re: Role Call ... Are you a Salty Dog?
My name is Ryan and I am a salty addict. I have been fishing the big blue since the early eighties when I was knee high to a herring. My experience comes from working the back deck of my families commercial fishing boats. More recently I have got my own play boats. I currently fish a 20' sled. It's not the most salty boat, but it works until I can get something better. I am an accomplished Salmon, Halibut, Bottomfish captain, looking to add tuna to that list. I have only met a couple of the salty dogs in person. I also look forward to changing that this summer.
