Default Big Boats without reg #s ?!

Big boats with big wakes makes me grumpy. They wake me up and spill my coffee!

FYI, some big boats are documented and don't have to have state #'s displayed like others.

Documented vessels issued a certificate of registration and validation decal under ORS 830.775, shall display the decals on both sides of the aftermost part of the hull in the upper, square foot, below the deckline.

Didn't see this either, these were cocktail barges. Private boats not for hire. Not documented by the coast gaurd.

No valid excuse yet.

Perhaps you should direct some rant towards our law-enforcement community. Documented vessels have their name & port of origin on the stern, yes?

Not all documented vessels have thier home port on the stern. These appeared to be nodocumented plastic cocktail barges from mostly Portland anyway. No licensed master would behave like that.

If the marine patrol stops to visit I will point them in that direction too, but they haven't stopped to visit for years, must be all the ugly lettering and safety gear I pack around that turns them off

I will check with the marine board regarding the cocktail barges from Portland with no documented decal aft, or reg # forward. They might be missing out on a good funding source.

a five mile an hour speed limit in the entire channel would sure reduce turbidity and erosion on the banks.

It didn't bother me until one of the skippers violated the rules of the road them was rude to boot.

I dont think the marine guys cant do anything unless they witness the infraction me thinks (excess speed, etc). They should get written up for the tags though if they are not displayed.

I seem to remember more than a couple ifishers getting nailed after the fact by the Green Weenies (Multnomah County). Then again, Columbia County might actually have a policy of enforcing only existing, bona fidelaws, rather than making them up as they go along like the MCSO does.

I'll agree that the cocktail barge crowd does more wake damage than anybody else. Every time I get slammed hard enough to knock me off my feet while on the dock where I work, it's a yacht. It's amazing- a 50' displacement hull will cruise by at about 15 knots, and the wake will shove a loaded 100,000 bbl barge against the pilings and the whole pier sways like a drunken sailor. But when a tug or ship goes by I don't even feel it.

Whats worse are the boats that are moored in public marinas, such as the Kalama Marina, that don't have current registration . I have seen some there that were last licensed in 99. Some have shrubs and trees growing on their outdrives. The way I understand it, boats on public waterways must have current registration. Some of those boats have also not paid their mooring fees in years and no one does anything about it. Figure that one out!

CB, from my experience, I believe our Columbia Co. Marine Patrol will certainly take an interest in what you've observed. Even complaints forwarded to OSMB about that area get forwarded down to the county level.

So I'd suggest copying your messages to Col. Co. Marine Patrol. At the least, it sounds like easy money for them.

I agree with Gary. The head of the Columbia County Marine Patrol (Sgt. Peabody) is very diligent about the proper display of registration numbers. I have had warnings from him for not enough contrast (on my little camo boat; it's hard to contrast that many colors with anything but white letters), for placement too near the bow so that they aren't clearly legible from the side, and for incorrect spacing. You can call the sheriff's office with the complaint, or you drive by his house everytime you head to your moorage (look for the sherriff's boats in the driveway to the side of his house). Feel free to call me if you need better directions to his house (not sure I should post his address on the internet).

Yes, Beefcake, thanks for the reminder. I couldn't recall his name. We chatted after he noticed our stern light worked but bow lights were out.

In the course of that meeting, once he checked my papers he remembered me from a recent letter I sent to Salem OSB about dock anglers not giving way at the Gilbert Dock so boats could get it. The message got passed down from Salem to him. All I can say is Mr.Peabody is diligent!

Sgt Peabody lives about 3 houses down from my place! I thought he was a mechanic with all the county rigs setting around. He hits coon island for coffee breaks on busy fishing days, might stop and talk with him there. That patrol boat is pretty cool, wonder when they are going to surplus it

Yeah, I had my eye on the old aluminum patrol boat. When they got the big "Black Rocket" looking one, the old alum one went into storage, and I started asking around. Anyway, they have fixed it up and put it back into service since then. They have another cool one too, but I don't see it much.

As far as Peabody being the mechanic, you are partially correct. He is a whiz with electronics, so he does all of the communications, radar, lights / sirens, etc for the sheriff's dept. That's why you always see different county vehicles there.

I haven't been walking my dog lately due to a sprained knee and a back injury, but I'm sure I've walked past your house a hundred times (and driven past it a thousand or more). If you see a big guy with a baseball hat and goatee walking a little black and brown hound dog puppy (that's usually out of control), say hi. I'm just down the street toward the sewer plant from you. Or, if your boat's still at Harlow's, I finally got mine in the water. I'm about halfway down the middle dock across from the nice Trophy. I'm sure we'll meet one of these days.

Beefcake and Chrome Bumper....

give me a call prior to one of these nice warm afterwork evenings when the shad are biting and I'll pick you both up at Harlowe's on my Hewes. Officer Peabody will no doubt appreciate having all the usual suspects rounded up on one boat

Speaking of being without numbers... Anyone know how long it is taking lately to get registration numbers from OSMB? I registered an out of state boat almost 3 weeks ago, and haven't received them yet.

Thx, Jon

It can take a while, but they won't hassle you as long as you keep your "temporary permit to operate a boat" with you. It's the receipt that you should have gotten from whoever you paid the registration fees to.

I'm in the little livingston with the honda, by the lockers. Oh, the oversized are in. Had another takedown, on a whole smallish shad. On the 4/0 penn and heavy salt water pole, (don't want to smoke my salmon gear). Just like Jaws, click........click, click, set the drag, zzzZZZZZ ZZZZZZ, he got away though, to slow on the anchor drop motor up drill.

OK guys. If the boat is over 5 net tons it is to be documented. Here is the regulation,

"The name and hailing port of a recreational vessel must be marked together on some clearly visible exterior part of the hull. The vessel name of a commercial vessel must also be marked on the port and starboard bow and the vessel name and the hailing port must also be marked on the stern. All markings may be made by any means and materials that result in durable markings and must be at least four inches in height, made in clearly legible letters of the Latin alphabet or Arabic or Roman numerals. The "hailing port" must include both a place and a State, Territory, or possession of in the United States. The state may be abbreviated."

The Oregon Marine Board has a violator report on line that you can fill out on line and send. They do follow up and have had officers go to the offending persons home and issue a citation just on the infromation they recieve on the report.

CB- Now I know who you are. Did you do any good tonight? We were anchored right in front of Harlow's catching a few baitfish, and I think we saw you head out this evening.

Yep, saw you out there, the shadding is slow. Did get my gear nice and straight though. Only fished an hour when I got called home for sweet and sour sturgeon.

CB- The shadding was sloooow for us too - until we added scent to our lures. Then, "Shabamalam" every 3-5 minutes! I had a little jar of crawfish smelly jelly in the boat for some reason, and it turned a skunk day into a fun finish.

I purchased a new boat in march. One month later I still had not received my numbers. I went to the osmb website & contacted them about it. A lady named Janess Eilers got right back to me & sent them out very quickly. Her email address is Janess.Eilers@state.or.us

Ohhh, scent, didn't think of using that. The little buggers are getting picky.
