Re: North! To Alaska, I\'m goin North... Trip thread!
Any new news, Rick? Hows the weather? The fishing? Mr. Fisherman?
Inquiring minds want to know...
Oh, and tell Mr. F. that I'm sorry I couldn't get back to him before he left... he's probably guessed by now, but the Grundens weren't left on the Kismet (we'da let him know looooong before this)
Hope the trip is everything he dreamed of!

Re: North! To Alaska, I\'m goin North... Trip thread!
Having the time of my life sums it up pretty nicely.
Just cleared customs here in Ketchikan!
Today I got to co-pilot the Tinker Toy, the vessel where my stateroom and private bath resides.
We have been anchoring in coves every night on the hook except last night when we stopped in Prince Rupert and tonight in Ketchikan.
The Northern Legacy is simply increadible and the Grubstake was a pleasure to pilot.
Tomorrow or the next day we leave for Dall Island and we get to START FISHING!
I can't wait.
Unfortunately the phone that Verizon sold me FOR THIS TRIP, to send pics and messages home with and to stay in touch DOSEN'T FRIGGIN WORK HERE!!! I think the discussion with them when I get home should prove interesting. I mean I spent $360 on THEIR RECOMMENDATION!
Anyway, I am in Alaska and all is good. The weather has been fantastic as the weather cells have either been ahead or behind us. So far we are making record time. Long long days and very short nights as we head to our destination.
The food has been fantastick, last night we had Yellowfin Tuna.
I am taking lots of pics and hope to share them with you all when I return.
Oh, by the way. We lost 3 computers on the way here. Mine is the last one holding out. It was out primary nav system on the boat today.
More details later. There are oysters up the street with my name on them.

Re: North! To Alaska, I\'m goin North... Trip thread!
No, this is not a back up to the back up.
They sold me an all digital phone. They do not work here. You need a 3 way phone that has analog.
Oh, and did I mention that they recommended this phone for this trip? Not happy with Verizon right now but I get to fish tomorrow instead of planting my but in a captains seat for 14 hours... not that I am complaining

Re: North! To Alaska, I\'m goin North... Trip thread!
meant the computer nav systems but I can see that you're not happy bout the phone... just for that why dont you make something die for the pain of not having a cell phone.

Re: North! To Alaska, I\'m goin North... Trip thread!
Well we are stocking up for the Summer here and will be doing laundry and loading supplies all day. We leave for the island tomorrow. I have a bit of pent up aggression that needs vented and fish are gonna die.
Heading up the street to the bar/laundrymat. I might be able to check in one more time before I deport.
We witnessed a pod of Orca that were feeding. They were circled up and beating the water with their tails and thrashing about. Sometimes broaching all the way out of the water. Very cool. We were too far away to get good pictures or to visually confirm the prey but in my mind they were seals
I watched a Bald Eagle swoop down and take a fish about 20 feet from the boat this morning as I sipped my coffee on the back deck. I love this stuff.
I am looking forward to getting into the Tuna but I have a few Yelloweye and shrimp to harvest first.

Re: North! To Alaska, I\'m goin North... Trip thread!
Here are a few, more later or you can see them all (well most of them) at Santana's tonight...
Me at the helm of the 60' Striker Sportfisher, Tinker Toy
Another shot
And part of the bounty that is Alaska...
In the background you will see the 36' Whistle Punk. That is the boat I towed behind Tinker Toy. The large ship is the Northern Legacy, an 85' expedition vessel. It is absolutely beautiful.

This was home for a night. A nice port
here is another...
The helm of the Grubsteak, a 32' Uniflight Salty Dog.
Here is the Starboard helm with my computer running Maptech. I love this stuff.
