Default 4 trips and finally success....

4 trips and finally success

Well not success, but I did see a deer while I was actually deer hunting today... Who would of thought that during a deer season, one might see a deer. I hunted in the Saddle Mountain area and on my way out a deer was running down the middle of the logging road. I thought, gosh a fawn, no doe, oh my gosh it is a fork... It had to be the smallest fork ever. If I get real desperate I might have to go take another look at it!!!

On the plus side, I saw a nice covey of quail and several grouse. I might have to switch to bird hunting.

Also, right at dusk I heard several nice bugles, anyone hunting Saddle Mountain, I will tell you where I was...

Winterkill-

I am actually still trying to figure out if I was in Saddle Mountain or Scappoose unit. What is the cutoff boundary? I know 26 divides Wilson and Saddle Mountain, but what is the eastern boundary for Saddle Mountain??? Is it the road to Timber?

Thanks,

Rip'N'Lips

Rip'N'Lips,
The eastern boundary is Timber Rd. from Hwy 26 up to Hwy 47 then thru Vernonia. If you were hunting off of Timber Rd. You were real close to my property. I own land on both sides of the Washington/Columbia County line that intersects Timber Rd. I also have Saddle Mt. elk tags if I decide to hunt that side of the road. Have been seeing elk on both sides of the road so am waiting till right before season starts to figure out what to do. Its gonna be crowded with hunters, thats for sure.

I was deer hunting the Saddle Mountain unit last Sat . Straight up noon a herd of about 30 elk wandered out into the clearcut I was driving along . 7 bulls 1- 6 point,1- 5 point and the rest tall spikes or 3 points . They just fed along a stand of trees for about half an hour as my wife and I watched them . This location is entry on the Crooked Creek Main line between Vernonia and Mist . Take a right on 277 rd follow to Burris main line then to Burris 259 road ....it is a flat clear cut with a small stand of trees at far end . maybe they will be around for some lucky hunter when season starts!
