Re: Quail for training
Tag a long
I don't know were Gates Or is, but if you have large feed store in the area I would check with them. Wilco feed usually has chicks of several different game birds this time of year. Get, feed them for a few weeks, and bingo your in business.

Quail for training
Anyone know where I can find some live quail to buy to train a dog?He loves sticks and I want to try to teach him to be soft with his mouth.

Re: Quail for training
I wouldn't be using live birds for training a soft mouth. I would use a scrub brush or a knobby dummy to make the dog feel something when trying to chew. A nice feathery warm bird would be to tempting, just my 2 cents.

Re: Quail for training
Using live birds is a good training method from my expirience.. Kill a couple and freeze them solid, that really works well to help with a hard mouth.

Re: Quail for training
Thanks alot everyone. I may need to hold off on the mouth training. I ran into a problem with him in deep water. He seems to be really clumsy and didn't get to the "deadfowl" training dummy I got to train with. He missed grabbing it, and then returned to shore and would not go back after it... I think he may not have been in the water much before I got him. He was fetching in the river last weekend just fine... Any ideas????????  He listens well, but I could not get him back into the water. We have been using the same dummy for a week on land and he has never failed to retrieve... I may just have to get hime used to swimming , or train for upland game...

Re: Quail for training
Put on your waders and teach him how to swim, pups don't realize to use there back legs alot of the time. Support his belly while he swims, he'll soon get the hang of it.
