Default Quail or Duck hunting??

Looking for a place to Quail hunt around the portland area. Went down to St. Louis ponds, but only saw a couple. Was interested in the Hermiston/Irrigon area, but dont really know how good the quail population is. Any recomondations on where to go, or techniques would be much appreciated. also was wondering if you can hunt the clackamas river for ducks, and if so where is it legal. thanks.

Well, If you like quail, I would start in the coast range. Very few people target them, and you can get some good shooting if you have a good dog. I usually look for clearcuts that are 3-5 years old and start walking the roads. Most of the time you will bust the coveys right off of the roads. Look for gated roads to hunt. If they've had alot of traffic, the quail will not be there. Some times you'll get a grouse or two if there are a few stands of young alder along the creeks. Good luck, and let me know how it goes. Oh yeah, you might want to wear some orange now because of the deer hunters.

The quail and grouse hunting in the coast has been very good this year down here by Coos Bay  , but it is not that close to Portland  .

I usually see 4 or 5 coveys a day in the afternoons walking the roads after deer hunters have left.

I have seen quail outside of Gresham though, on my way to the mountain, so you may drive out that way in your search.
