Default Boat Insurance-how much do you pay per month?

Searched the archives and didn't find much.

How much do you pay per month for boat insurance? I'm looking to buy a 19'-20' boat. Just trying to figure out what people pay on average.

Thanks,
StinkyH

Shop around. Prices vary quite a lot in this niche.

We spend about 400( I think) a year. Our boat is bigger than what you are asking about. It covers salt use too( not every policy does).

Good Luck.

That's the info I was looking for. Good info regarding the salt coverage.

I'm looking at a Seahawk or Asaltor at the moment.

Thanks for the replies.

I am paying $ 7 a month. It is an older boat but got a motor and a kicker.
When my agent asked what is it worth, I told ~ 3500. Hence is the $ 7/mo. Full coverage. with towing if needed

StinkyH,

The offshore part of insurance coverage has been discussed on the Salty Dog's. If you are venturing out on the big pond, might want to check coverage. I know State Farm is 75 mi.
I pay $350/year including 5k personal property coverage on a 2002, 21' inboard sled and trailer.

Thanks for prompting me to open that big envelope from the insurance company sitting in the in-basket.

As in any insurance, there are variables. Here's what we have on a 1999 179 Hewescraft with a price of $22,000 and insured for replacement cost:

Boat & trailer, emergency service, $5k of on-board property, $500k liability, $5k medical expense, $15k coverage against uninsured boaters, for an annual expense of $309.

well...my leaky tub dosen't have the privlege of being insured but I do recomend a Coast Guard Aux. class it only takes thirteen nights to complete and ya might even learn something, but one of the added benefits is it will lower your insurence rates.

ok, kinda a stupid question...in WA is it required to have insurance on the boat...Only reason I ask is that it is on road vehicles but not on motorcycles (if they are paid off).

I have tried to dig through the DOL/DOT pages but could not seem to come up witn anything.

Thanks

I dont believe you have to have insurance on your boat unless you want in washington. The loan company on my boat requires it. As for what I pay the boat has $42,000 full replacement policy plus is good offshore in U.S and canada up to 15 miles. I pay just under $500.00 a year.

I pay $277 for a new 20' NR Seahawk. Liability is $500,000 with $1,200 deductible. I changed from my old company to BoatU.S. when the old company nearly doubled it's premiums. Thanks to the guys on this board for putting me on to BoatU.S.

I pay 21 bucks a month. I have FULL replacement cost coverage, NOT market value replacement coverage. Be careful about what you are paying for. BoatUs is my insurance co. and so far they have been great. I have an 18ft Motion Marine insured for $24,000.

I pay just below $200/year and have a 2001 Weldcraft Renegade. The coverage is top-notch, and I got this rate because I rolled it in with our house, both vehicles, and a few other things. For all of our coverage we only pay $198 per month, and that's covering a lot of $$ in vehicles. By the way, State Farm.

I pay about $ 250.00 per per year for my 18 footer. Replacement coverage. I get a 10% discount for already having my boaters card. Besure you ask if they offer the discount.

You know, last time I checked "replacement coverage" (for cars and boats) means what it would cost to replace with a boat of equal age/condition/value. In other words, the depreciated cost of your boat, not the new cost or cost to replace with the same model but new.

"Agreed Value" is what I have and it is a fixed dollar amount right on the policy. It is what I payed for the boat when I purchased it. The survey had to state that the boat was worth that amount.

Check with your agent of course, but I think you guys are mistaken if you think you would get the new value or what you paid for the boat in a "total loss" situation.

I know you'll let me know if I'm wrong.

When I am not fishing I sell insurance. There are many things that go into the rate for a boat. I may pay more than you do, on the same boat, depending on my driving record, if its a pkg. policy, your insurance score, time with the company, where you live, house power of the engine and speed of the boat. Just to let you know that many things go into the rate. Be Careful out there.

I just insured my boat a couple of months ago. It came out to $122.00 for a 98' Hewes craft, 70hp Suzuki and 8hp kicker. It's with allstate. I'll probably need an attorney to collect on it if anything happens but it's insured. Boater's card does help.

Miss B Haven...good point on the "Replacement Cost" information. I may have used the wrong term, ignorance of the correct term on my part. I pay for coverage that will pay me 24,000 upon total loss of the boat. I pay extra for this type of coverage. There is no depreciation with this type of policy.

Something else to think about is if you are fishing in a tourament you need to be covered for that allso .Most policeys exclude tournaments . If you have a problem they will void everything .
