Monster Elk dilema (pics)
This bull was killed this year out of Monroe and could be the new pending world record for Rosevelt elk.
http://www.ifish.net/uploads/513415281.jpg
However, there's a catch. If you didn't notice the velvet on the horns and the rifle between them it was killed in late Aug. by a guy with a landowners tag. B&C is not allowing it as being an official score because it wasn't killed during an authorized season, but I guess it's totally legal how it happened. Not sure how, but someone hopefully can enlighten me on this. This is coming from a friend of mine from Eastman's and the pic sent to me by another buddy. So this is second hand info. but pretty reliable.
My question is how do you guys feel it should be scored if indeed he did kill it legally? Even though it was killed when there wasn't an official season? The whole story is confusing to me, maybe someone has some better answers. I'm not trying to smear mud on his elk but am more curious to the real story.

Re: Monster Elk dilema (pics)
It was killed legally. I know about this Elk because it's not far away from me, and I have a few freinds that know the guy that killed it. It's a new tag in the synopsis, Willamate Valley Elk tag. It start August 1st 2002 and goes through May 31st 2003. It's there to help farmers control the Elk populations from hurting their crops, from the elk off of Finley Wildlife Refuge. About it getting scored, well it's in Velvet, so it will not be the new World record. I think that it should not be scored anyway, because if you do draw that tag, and I think there are about 30 of them a year, the chances for the common man of getting permission to hunt out their is Slim to none. All the landowner are going to get the LP tags and keep the grounds to themselves. Big Bulls out there!

Re: Monster Elk dilema (pics)
I believe the tag this guy had was not a LP tag but a damage pool hunt. Which is a lottery, and any one can win them. The land owners do get extra points for the damage draw however.

Re: Monster Elk dilema (pics)
B&C will not allow it, if it is stripped of its velvet? It is still a trophy animal taken w/fair chase and during an open season! Drawing a tag like that is like drawing an out of state Arizona rifle hunt in one of the premier unit (they all are) so I dont see what the difference is. They allow auction hunters to score their animals and put them in the books and those are tags that go to people who have the $$$ to purchase quality tags. That is crap if they dont let them enter it!

Re: Monster Elk dilema (pics)
If its killed fairchase in an open season, whats the problem? I can't get access to a lot of land, does that mean that if someone who does have access should not be allowed to kill and record trophy game?

Re: Monster Elk dilema (pics)
Hey guys, I just told you the hunt it was. It's not that hard to draw. Not many people apply because it is pretty much 100% private land.
Willamate Valley Elk tag, it's a rifle tag.

Re: Monster Elk dilema (pics)
RichH, No that is not what I mean, but if ODFW is going to help these farmers out with controlling the Elk population that is creating problems for these farmers, then these farmers need to let the people hunt their lands. That's not happening.

Re: Monster Elk dilema (pics)
Either way, it is a huge bull. I don't think many people would complain about it hanging on their wall. I doesn't look like a very hard hunt. Wait for daylight....fire.

Re: Monster Elk dilema (pics)
If it was a legal kill, during a legal hunt with a tag that had to be drawn; it should count. Score it. If it can't compete because it was still in velvet than that's a different issue. Sounds to me like this was within a legal season, just not the 'traditional' or usual season we all are used to.

MuleyBuck,
I agree. If the landowners want the critters out they need to let the people in to get them. Unfortunately you can't legislate intelligence. Just look at some of the people driving boats and such.

Re: Monster Elk dilema (pics)
Thats a tough call, is a landowner damage permit a regular hunting season? If it is and he followed all the P&Y rules of fair chase, it should count. At any rate it's a dandy of a bull. On the other hand, if the landowner was really worried about crop damage, he should have shot a cow which would have resulted in a larger impact on the population of the elk in the area. But in his shoes, I would have opted for th bull also  .

Re: Monster Elk dilema (pics)
I checked on it a couple of weeks ago. At first, OSP was checking an allegation it was taken less than legally, but that was cleared.
Boone and Crockett folks told me they don't take anything with a shred of velvet because the velvet throws off the measurements, thus the decline.
I believe the hunts are by draw, since they're damage...However, most hunters seem to be locals.
Also think there was a story in the Corvallis Gazette-Times Sunday, but haven't look at it yet.
One light-side thing about it all was a call the ODFW biologist had one day from someone sitting in another state (montana) looking through the records of large elk and one place caught his eye...
Said he had a pack string of horses and was ready to go into any rough country for extended periods to hunt elk.
What, he asked, could he find out about this place in Oregon called "Benton County?"

Re: Monster Elk dilema (pics)
Has anyone heard anything new about this lately? I was just told that the bull has been scored and came in at something like 404 pts. Dont know if its anything official or not. I was also told this was not a wait for daylight and fire type of hunt but took several days and was taken at over 400 yrds.
I was told this by a family member of mine that was told by someone else. Im just curious how it all turned out. No matter what this is one HUGE bull!
Jon

Re: Monster Elk dilema (pics)
I have a slight problem...B&c will not allow it because of velvet???...what about all the other hunts in Colarado, New mexico, Arizonia, Montana etc. that start early in the year and most have limited entry. And i believe Washington has or had a Trophy Bull limited entry in some of their Indian reservation areas in Early August...of coarse i could be wrong they maybe not to early enough for velvet im not sure..correct me if i am wrong here guys.

Re: Monster Elk dilema (pics)
Hey Bill, you really need to read the story. It goes on to tell about a second Roosevelt bull killed in the same area as the Ballard bull by Ballards cousin Randy Sherman and that bull went 340! A AWESOME trophy in my eyes as well.

Re: Monster Elk dilema (pics)
Hey Ya-all doesn't anyone get Wash-ore Fish and Game? I got mine Monday, Its all in there!! Great story and yes its a bonafide record....
Although the scoring won't be OFFICAIALLY recognized AS the world record until it goes before the panel of B&C which is scheduled to meet in the spring of 2004 - SO FOR now its a pending record.

Re: Monster Elk dilema (pics)
Man, someone must have dug this one up from the archives!! Almost forgot talking about it. I haven't read the published version of the hunt yet but plan doing it soon. It'll be curious to see what the B&C panel says in the end.
