Default EE Wilson (as of late)

Been slow on the pheasant farm for me lately. Went out yesterday in the afternoon and only saw one bird that I didn't get to take a crack at. Went out this morning with willametteriveroutlaw and one of his friends. I think we'd only gone about 20 feet off the road when we found our first (and only) rooster. I'm sure I would have nailed it with my 2nd shot, but Ryan was too fast for me and had to punch his tag. Had to leave fairly early for class. What is with all the people out there on weekdays now? DOESN'T ANYONE WORK???

Good to meet ya Ryan, sure it won't be the last.

Went out today and hunted from 12:00 to 2:00 only saw one roster and someone else was shooting that at the time. Been out three times in the last week and have yet to get one with my young dog.. Maybe I will go out Saturday or Sunday I guess they are planting 95 birds on Saturday and maybe everyone else will be duck hunting so that might improve my odds.

Ben, thanks for a great time. I let everyone have a shot at it I guess it is just who's quickest on the followup. I am hoping to try again on monday morning before class. If this weather will cooperate, we have definately gotta go chase some deer next week.

The last few years that I've hunted out there I have one thing to say. If you don't have a dog that will go into the blackberries, it's worthless outside of an hour after light. Basically the first birds that are dumb are killed in the open right away, the ones that figure it out are headed right into that thick brush.

Thankfully I have a dog that will do anything for a bird. He's a monsterous black lab that would go in there and flush sometimes 8-10 roosters at a time out of the stickers and we would have a hayday. However, I'd be picking stickers out of his head for the rest of the week. But he was shure happy when he would come out of there bloody as long as he could get ahold of a bird.

Tailchaser my Choc lab goes into those Berry bushes but has yet to get any rosters out of them. It’s his first year hunting but he is getting the hang of it pretty fast. Yesterday he flushed 2 nice ones for me but I missed them both. The first one flew out the wrong side of a bush and I missed him. The second bird flushed as I was walking down that trail behind the trap range and I had my gun on my shoulder and didn’t get a shot at him. My dog gave me a very displeased look and went back to hunting. I think he needs to go out with a seasoned dog to see what he really needs to be doing. He has worked pheasants at the trainers but this is his first real world hunt and I miss both birds he flushed :depressed: Thinking about going out tomorrow morning and trying my luck if anybody wants to go let me know.

Any ideas where to start training a really great lab. I just got one from a guy in corvalis. He is a really smart dog, has sit, stay, heel, and come as well as a release command. He is a choc from the merganser kennels. Any help would be appreciated as I am not a well informed trainer at all...

Tag - a - long,

How old is your Pup? And are you looking for a pro trainer or do you want to try it yourself? If you are looking for a pro you have a great one right down the road from Corvallis in Monroe a place called Utopia Kennels. It is where I took my Lab for his Basics and he is turning out to be a great hunter. If you would like more information about them let me know.
If you were going to try and train him yourself you should look at a few books on the subject so you know what you are getting yourself into. That is where I started and when I decided to take him to a pro for his basic yard work and force fetching. There is so much to it that I felt better having someone do it for me that knows what they are doing so I didnt create more problems then solve by doing it myself. Good luck and feel free to contact me if you need more information.

He is a year old. Not really a pup. I'dyself if possible. He has tons of energy and a pretty good start on the basics. He has never been around a gun so I am not sure how he'll react. I'll look at sportsmans tomorrow for a few books. Thanks.

Tag-a-long,
There are Retriever clubs out there to get you started. Greater Pacific, Salem Ret, Oregon Ret etc etc. Good place to start and expose your dog to birds. Some basic easy books to check out are by "Wolters", easy to read and use, not perfect but it's a start.
