Default Floppy-Eared Mule Deer

Just got off the phone with a biologist from the area we hunt and he explained to me the floppy-ear situation. This is a sickness that is referred to as "Blue Tongue" and is mainly in severe drought conditions. It is caused by biting midges that hatch in stagnant pools of water that in normal water years would probably be free-flowing streams. The biologist said that it causes severe flu-like symptoms for the deer and will generally weed out weaker, older does during the winter. He said it will also more than likely result in a poor fawn crop the following year, but the year after that, the fawn crop should be good as all the remaining does would be younger, more healthy and productive animals. Also of note, he said that this was in NO way harmful to humans if consumed. The only problem being generally these 'Blue tongue' deer are in worse physical shape, with less muscle mass (or meat). Hopefully, we'll get some rain soon.

Did the biologist say whether elk get this also?

We just got back from our deer hunt in the Northside unit, hunting Long Creek and vicinity, and I kept a special eye out for floppy eared deer. I'm glad to report we never saw one in probably hundreds of deer spotted. Hundreds? Yep, if you count the well-watered alfalfa fields behind the no hunting signs. We actually saw lots of deer in the high country too (pictures to follow) and still no floppy ears. I take that as a good sign. They all appeared to be in good shape with lots and lots of fawns. Evidently being a buck isn't all bad.

We kicked up elk, quail, grouse (not many), and turkeys (bunches). That country sure needs some moisture, though. It's as if the land has used its last reserves of water, and this winter may be make or break time. If you're going to do a rain dance, keep eastern Oregon in your thoughts.

Didn't think to ask about this affecting elk, as generally, there isn't any elk in the area. So, to answer your question, there was no mention of Blue Tongue affecting elk or any other animals.
