Default Just back from eastern hunting,,

I was in the Chesnimnus unit for the last seven days. We had a party of 7 hunting everyday. We all know what we are doing and know the area well. I dont know what the problem is, but we did not see any large deer. We did manage 3 forken horns, and one of em was a 12yr olds first deer, so that was kinda neat.
did anyone else have an experience with not seeing a lot of larger deer? We always have at least one 4pt and a 3pt or two. I also did not see the elk we usually see, several cows and spikes, but not the bigger bulls.

Anyone else notice this? I was kinda disapointed. We have a history of filling at least 5 if not 6 tags in camp.

although we did not get the big ones.. we had a great time and I cant wait till next time..

I had a similar hunt. There was 8 of us, My dad and I passed up 9 forken horns and spikes on saturday and sunday, trying to get my kid his first deer. He did finally get one. We worked our butts off, hiking the hills, but all three deer were harvested near logging roads. Nice area, but we haven't got anything larger than a forken-horn in our last two trips up there. Do you discard quantity and go look for quality? Always a tough call. The oldest, youngest and slowest of the group all got deer, so that was good.

I only counted 7 of us, I did not count your brother in law, he was too busy passing up bucks because they were not big enough.

Why is it that I have to be the slowest,,,,

There are two types of hunters, the quick and empty handed.
I did have a good time as always and am looking forward to next time,,,
just leave the taco bake at home next time,,,Im still sore...

K9Jeff, What area of Chestnemus (sp) were you in? We are going elk hunting up around coyote camp ground this year and are hoping to pull out a bull. I know the counts are down, but I'm not a trophy hunter so I'll take a spike.

Hooked,,,, we were in the coyote campground. I did not see any branch elk this year, but did see some spikes. I have never elk hunted the area, but see lots while deer hunting.

Good luck.

This was my boy Ryan's first buck on our Chesnimus hunt. I leave him with Grandpa for 15 minutes, and he gets a deer. So much for sidehilling those draws with Dad!!!

Corlyn, Great for him. Looks like he's pretty proud. They probably be many more for a dead eye like that.
