Elk Kill
I have been asked to post this on both the hunting and main board, in hopes that someone has heard something about this:
Click here to read Bill Monroe's column about the kill
Joe Schwab says that usually, someone will brag to a friend about these kinds of kills.
If you have any information about this, please contact your OSP.
Thanks,
Jen

Very sick, demented people did this....and by the amount of dead animals, likely more than just one!! Some pretty scary people living back in the hills in those areas, but it just as easily could've been someone in the area with motorcycles. It apparently was quite a ways behind a locked gate?
If they're caught, taking away hunting priviliges and fines won't be enough.....I would say sentence them to go to every single OHA habitat working party, at their own expense, for about 10 years. Of course, they may disappear in a ravine somewhere during the first one they show up at

Re: Elk Kill
First of all I am surprised a game warden followed some turkey buzzards to a kill. Maybe I dont give them enough credit ..... nah
19 shells is a lot of shooting, I am curious how far the shells are from the animals. For one gun to do this it would take a unique set up that a single person to get this much shooting off. I wonder if the shells are all piled up along side a stump, or in 2 piles like there was a couple of guns banging away.
4 hind quarters is a lot of meat to cut off the animal and get a mile out of behind locked gates. I doubt anybody would park at a gate that was closed to entry, hike in a mile and then shoot up a herd and then make multiple trips out to the gate. I would be looking at who ever has keys to the gate to start with. Some gates you can get a 4 wheeler around but it doesnt take much to throw a motorcycle over the top of a gate either.
When they find the perps, I bet they either live very close to the gate, or have a key to the gate.
I hate to hear about these thefts of our wildlife. It is really bad when they take a little bit of the meat and some horns and leave the rest to rot. I heard on the radio today, Oregon Hunters Assoc has offered a reward of $3000. I sure hope they get to pay this out.
One thing about outlaws, they arent the smartest, and they will be telling a buddie who will be telling a buddie and pretty soon somebody will tell a gammie.

Re: Elk Kill
Just sickening. But at least it was'nt Roy. His springer record preceeds his elk record.
I think you are right Roy about it being someone close. Hope they catch them and Hang 'em.

Re: Elk Kill
I was down in Newport last weekend and saw another wanted poster in town. Someone had killed three bulls and one buck, taken the antlers and backstrap in August. It was listed a mistdemeaner , crap like this needs to be felony. At least each violation is punishable by a year in jail. I hope they catch them and put them to work for the state for the next six years, making license plates.

Re: Elk Kill
I too hope they catch them, but after listening to the game officers assigned to this on the news last night, I'm not very confident. On the news last night they said they had found nearly 40 "30 caliber" bullet casings and thought there were two s-h-o-o-t-e-r-s (didn't know this was a bad word) involved. Because they refused to disclose the specific caliber (.30-06, .300 winchester, .308 winchester, .300 Weatherby, 7.63x39, etc.), it could have been an SKS or other type of .308 caliber assault rifle, but I'm only speculating. I just think it would be hard to get 20 rounds off in a bolt action before the elk took off. I think Roy is probably right - it's probably someone with a key since it would be very difficult to get that much meat out without someone seeing you if you were packing it or even taking it to the gate on a bike, 4 wheeler, or motorcycle. There are lots of guys with keys - fuel truck drivers, different logging company's who harvest timber, tree fallers, biologists, etc.

Re: Elk Kill
Stories like this just make me sick. What would posess someone to do something like this is beond me. I could see someone shooting something to feed there family(maybe). Just shooting up game for the sure sake of it is just rediculous. People that poach should have severve fines and jail time. Maybe this would help these freaks think twice.

Re: Elk Kill
Hey Killertraylor, I resent biologists being mentioned as a possible suspects in this elk kill......
As a Federal biologist/hunter/fisherman, my number goal in the woods/on the water is to fish/hunt morally and ethically and always follow the laws no matter what - all of the biologists I know, which are many, think as I do. And i suspect, so do most loggers, fueltruck drivers, and whomever else you mentioned previously - the folks that did this are lower than low and we all need to keep on the lookout for this type of person - which gives us all a bad name. Turn in all poachers!!!! batman

Re: Elk Kill
OK Killertraylor maybe I was a little sensitive -you also got me on my field of expertise too, little crawly things - otherwise known as amphibians. How did you know?
So we are in violent agreement about what to do to poachers. Keep your eyes out and your cell phone on!
And thanks for the help on bullet types on the other post. See you in the woods, batman

Re: Elk Kill
This is just plain sad. I agree that who ever did this has a good knowledge of the area and probable lives close. However it will be tough to catch them and even harder to convict them even if someone does say something.
One thing for sure however we can't say that this will give hunters a bad rap. These people are obviously NOT hunters. Sounds like a couple of guttless punks that need their back side kicked. Sure wish I could use stronger language. :depressed:

Re: Elk Kill
I never said any such thing, batman. I only stated my opinion that the jerks who did this probably had a key to the gate. I brought up biologists to mention there are LOTS of people with keys, not just Weyerhaeuser timber workers and therefore it may be very difficult to find the culprit unless they talk. Sorry you were so offended.
If I were investigating this case, I'd start with anyone with a key and unfortunately, that includes some of your compatriots. You can't just rule out someone because of their job title...although I whole heartedly agree with you, I've never met a biologist who I'd think would do something as horrible as this.
Now go back to studying the effect the decrease in population of the zebra striped tadpole in Lost creek has on herbivores and carnivores alike...
