I hunted the Owyhee unit for deer (I'm still supposed to be there but killed my deer opening day and decided to come home before the meat became too rank) and saw several chukar and quail. Most of the Chukar were along the Owyhee river 2-5 miles below the dam. Quail were everywhere. Also saw lots of chukar along Succor creek when driving from Adrian to Leslie Gulch. That was the one benefit I lost by coming home early - no chukar hunting this weekend :depressed:

Default Eastern Oregon Upland Report

Well here it is,

I have traveled throughout the desert between Vale and Jordan Valley and this year looks like it will be an outstanding Chuckar hunting season. If you are willing to travel deep into the desert, the Chuckars are there. I have scouted around Watson on the Owyhee and have seen alot of Chuckars. The highest concentration will be along the Owyhee river. There are many resovoirs and canals that went dry in June, so the birds are more plentiful where there is water.

There are quail just about everywhere you look. So there is no specific palce that is better than any other as far as I have found.

Usually by this time of year I see several "smashed on the road" pheasants but this year I have not seen too many on the roadway. Don't let this fool you, the pheasant population in this area has been on the rise for the last few years.

If you head over this direction don't forget to throw in your favorite varmint rifle. Each coyote eliminated increases the bird population for future hunts.

Happy Hunting.
