How did all of us blacktail hunters do?
I skipped the madhouse on saturday, and went out on sunday.. We saw two forks, two spikes, and a few elk. Nothing worth shooting this early. The one fork was pretty big, but i will not pack a fork out 4 miles. How about everyone else?

I had to work. :depressed:
I'm planning to take off the last week of the season and head down to the Rogue unit where the big boys live.

We hunt on Mtn. Bikes. We just hunted locally in the valley. Hopefully Weyhouser opens up within the next week. We usually hunt around dallas but, had to find a new spot at the last moment.
FYI: The hotline for Weyhouser is (541)741-5403

Re: How did all of us blacktail hunters do?
Between my son and myself we have seen 5 does, 1 buck that was too quick for my son and 3 branched bulls. One bull was truly massive, 6x7 running with about 20 cows. 1 bull was by himself, a 5x6. The third bull was about a 4 pt, with 3 cows. Things are already looking good for the upcoming elk rifle season.

I was over by mapleton on sat. First light I seen a black bear, I have a tag but he was moving way to fast to get a shot off. Then i spotted a spike and a doe later on. I think I will go farther down south this weekend.

Outlaw,
I know where you are mountain biking. Stay off of the 1980 road. That is my road. I have got two 3 points and a 4x5 in that bowl in the last 5 years. Last year on opening day I hiked in to the top of the said location from the 1950 road and saw several deer, 3 bucks, but not good enough to shoot on opening day. Plus it is a long way out. Good luck!
Didn't hunt this years opener but I heard the area was closed even to bike, hike in.

Re: How did all of us blacktail hunters do?
Did a short morning hunt Monday on the coast range near Jones Creek but saw nothing but rain! Not unusual though. It's a crappy place to hunt but I managed to pull a fork out of there 2 years ago. With as little game as I see I can't be choosy. If it's got legal horns I'm shooting. Perhaps someday when I can convince myself to stop fishing and go out and scout, I'll be a little more picky.

Haven't been out yet, Waiting for a bit more rain and colder weather. I am glad to see a little rain in early season though, seems like it has been forever since it rained hard on the opener. Might get out later in the week for a little Hunting/Scouting trip.

I didn't punch a tag on the High Cascades. Now, I have to wait until the this weekend before I can hunt again (scored an antlerless tag  ).

PDX kevin, You can still hunt the general season if you have an unfilled High cascades tag..
Does anyone know how much rain it will take to open our woods back up?
I didn't mean to call anyone a bad hunter for shooting forks, but for me it isn't an option. I live to kill big blacktails.

Re: How did all of us blacktail hunters do?
We hunted Saturday and a little bit on Sunday in my local area. We saw a total of 3 does. I wish I had the opp. to see anything with horns. I personally meat hunt and care very little about horns. I prefer to shoot the forks, they eat pretty good. I hope I have the opp. to see a fork in the near future.

Re: How did all of us blacktail hunters do?
Went to Medford to hunt with my brother, Soooo dry down there. We knew it woudl be rough the only deer we saw were in peoples yards and while leaving the woods in the dark.
Lots of good hiking. We did see a weird fork Buck with one antler the normal position and the other growing straight down past the ear, in the dark on the way home of course.

Re: How did all of us blacktail hunters do?
Stryker,
We were hunting the whiskey bravo tango rd right between black butte porter and olympia  .
I have no problem with guys who meat hunt, I like meat but the problem is meat only lasts a season, Horns are forever. Those big old bucks weigh more and if you take care of them right, they taste just as good better than any tender young fork.
Stryker, drop me and email and we could compare tactics.

Re: How did all of us blacktail hunters do?
I work the weekend shift so my hunting goes on during the week. I'm hunting the same area that I did last year. Last year I probably saw a total of 10 does, hunting every weekend. This year has been drastically different. Went out Monday evening which had perfect weather. Started out with a drive hunt through fern and open timber. Jumped 2 bulls a spike and a forky. To bad it wasn't elk season. Then ended up seeing two more does on that drive. Hit the one clearcut and a couple of small meadows. Ended up see a spike deer and six more does. Promising first day. Then went out Wednesday evening. Similar hunt and saw 9 does. Exciting first two days since we have seen so many more deer compared to last year hunting the same spots. One thing I think that really helped was being able to hunt during the week. We will see if any bucks will start showing up. Good luck to all of you and keep up the reports.
