Three up, Three Down
Went hunting on 5/10/05 with some buddies from work. The guy on the right and i (on the left) both worked all night in the emergency room and were really tired and debating going...tired, cold, rainy, windy....ahh what the heck, lets go. We pick up our buddy and coffee all around and headed up into the mountains.
First stop and calling and all we could get to answer was a hen on roost in a nearby tree. She kind of sounded like a quail for a little bit until we got right under the tree and then she just sounded mad.
Any way, we moved on to many different spots. Lots of mud and some puddles up to the floor boards. Fortunatly we had 4wd and new tires. Lots of calling and no gobbles to be heard.
Finally it was getting to be time to think about going home and getting some shut eye when we passed a particularily turkyish looking site. One of us with a box call and I with a push-button call, called for about 5 minutes and were just about to get back in the truck when i heard a faint gobble. With the wind and sprinkles it sounded a LONG way off. A few more yelps and this time, definitly gobblers and moving our way. A mad scramble to get out guns and a decoy and set up. One more call and in come rushing two randy jakes and a fine looking tom holding back and strutting. All three of us were set up in different positions and we each took the bird closest to us, two for eating and one for mounting. The tom had a 9 1/2 inch beard and 1 inch spurs.
This was my first turkey hunt here in the northwest (even though ive been here for 10 years and no...im not from california) and is definitly one of my most memorable hunts!
I was really suprised because these turkeys were only responding to the push call and not to a box call that day, also kind of suprised that we had such good results on such a poor weather day.
Ill try to post picures here... (ok apparently i need some help posting a picture  anyone?)
