Default Suggestions on fishing between Portland & Boise

I am looking for a good spot to camp and fish with my family that lives in Boise, and I live in Portland. I have a boat but it is not a requirement that I take it. We would like to go somewhere where the fishing is ok and the temperatures will be pleasant. I know that the weather can be iffy this time of the year so I am thinking desert lakes, or streams. Any suggestions would be great. I am not asking for any secret spots but if you have one that you want to give to me, please email.
Thank You.

Any other criteria? Around LaGrande? Hood River? Lake or stream preference? What to stay on public land for free, or want amenities??

Not sure about the run timing, but the Grand Ronde has a good steelhead fishery and lots of open space.

John Day Area is nice. Lots of smallmouth from now until late summer. And, It is about halfway for both. La Grande to Baker is over halfway for you.

From here, you can go to Madras and then to Prineville and East. They can go on I84 to Baker and then West, or on I84 to Ontario and then west, whatever uits there fancy. Look at a map, you will see that I 84 actually is longer in distance.

When I lived in Corvallis, It is the same time to go up I5 and then take I84, as it is to just head east to Bend and then go through Burns to Boise.

Grande Ronde is a no-go for steelhead until Sept-Oct, depending on the weather/water conditions. Dunno about trout; i'd imagine it ought to be decent.

Agree that JD is likely your best bet. It's a big system, though. Some places the access is very good, but other sections you can only reach by float. Better put in some time w/ a good map...
