Default Mist area for deer?

I have a couple of young hunters who have doe tags for a special youth hunt in December. The area is 21 SQ miles due east of Mist on Longview Fiber and Hancock lumber property. I'd like to scout the area after general rifle deer is over, but have never been in the area before. Does anyone know if they keep the gates open? Any info on the area would be of great help. This will be the kids first deer hunt so I want to get some scouting done before we take them.

Thanks

My son has a tag for the Baker point hunt. I have heard that a representitive for Longview fibre comes and opens the gates for the kids hunt for Baker point and the Cedar Creek hunts. I have heard he isn't real prompt. someone said he rolled in about 9:00 one morning. I am really suprised that we didn't get a map or some instructions from the state.

If there hunts are like my son's, it is actually a either -sex hunt, even though it is a 600 series.

Norm, Last year the gates were closed do to active logging and some gates posted no entery. There is a mainline to the north of that hunt but it is posted weekend use only. If they do open the gates this year they will close them after the general elk season. I was in that area last weekend and the gates are locked and posted no entery. There were some bowhunters at a couple of gates that seemed to be missing the signs

Thanks for the info, I'll try and get in during a weekend during rifle season and scout it out. Sounds like we better find some areas we can hike into from the main road. I'd rather be in hunting before 9:00 .

Norm. Any luck this weekend. I took my boy out this afternoon to Baker point, but didn't see anything.

We hunted both days without any luck. Boy was the weather nasty. We ran across some elk, but no deer. Only saw one deer taken out of the area all weekend. Talked to a guy who does the gas line maintenence in the area, he said they rarely see any deer in the area, mostly elk. With two more weekends, we still have a chance. Good luck to you and your son.
