Default Changing gear oil?

How important is it to not have any air in the lower unit when done changing the gear oil???

My yamaha manual calls for filling the unit by the drain plug unit it runs out the top, once flowing freely from the top you're supposed to put the plug in then remove the fill tube from the bottom drain hole and put the plug back in.

I'm concerned I wasn't quick enough and didn't get the plugs in fast enough and let some air in.....is that okay or should I do it again and have some help?

The manual for my 2004 Yamaha 50HP gives the same set of instructions, but doesn't recommend filling completly full. They prefer to leave some room for the oil to expand when hot.

You can always top off the oil via the top fill plug.

It doesn’t work to try and fill it from the fill line plug. The holes are too small to just pour it in so it forces you to use a hose and adapter and force the oil in. if you don’t do it from the bottom there is nowhere for the air to escape. So as soon as you remove the tube from the hole it pukes all kinds of oil back out because the case is pressurized.

Is there a pump or something you can buy to make this job easier?

Yep there’s little cheep pumps that resemble the pump on a little soap dispenser. I think they are like 8 or 9 bucks for the pump, hose and adapter.

Would I have to go somewhere like Stevens Marine or would Joes carry something like that?

Not sure, good question. I would probably suspect that you will have to go somewhere like Stevens.

You can find one at any auto parts store, but you may have to go to a Boat store to find the right end for the hose. Yamahas have a special size for the fitting that threads onto the motor.
