Default Salmon flies on the big D

So my brother was over on the D this last weekend and said that the Salmon flies were out in force around Maupin. The only problem was the fish were paying them no attention. I have heard that it takes a little while for the fish to realize dinner is on the table. Has anyone had any luck over there with Salmon flies yet and if not when will be the best time to go? Last year the hatch was later than this but with conditions the way they have been I'm not sure when to head over. Any ideas?

It should pick up once it warms and stays that way for just a little bit.

Last Saturday the Salmon flies were out in full force on the big D. But the fish really wanted nothing to do with them. All fish caught were on prince nymphs.

Question: Is the life cycle of a salmon fly so short that all they seam to want to do is each other?

Sunday after a night of lightning, thunder, rain and a sleep over in the now named “Party Rover” the river was cloudy, the skies were grey and not a single Salmon fly was to be seen. However trailing a prince nymph behind a stone fly still seamed to do the trick.

the life cycle of a salmon fly nymph is 3 years (pretty sure), but they only hatch once a year around this time. you can catch trout on the big D year round with a salmon fly nymph (one of my best flies in the winter), so to answer your question... if you had one month to get a piece after 3 years, what would you do??????????????

Don't let bad weather discourage you. Here are a couple pics from last year. This should get the blood moving - sure did for me!

That is a PIG Chromaflage! I hope to hit one like it here in the next couple of weeks.
Meskel... As for this weekend I am in. It looks like the float tubes will be involved. Next weekend I'm on the John Day for 5 days slaying bass, so the weekend of June 4 and 5 should be perfect for hammering redsides on salmon flies! Anyone else????
