Default KGW News: Wind River Rescue

Saw a report on the news last night about a fisherman that aparently fell off a cliff at the Wind River yesterday. The report indicated that he had some head and leg injuries, but should be fine. Just glad it wasn't any more serious than it was. Anyone know anything about it?

I work with these guys and had a great report from the flight crew that was involved in the rescue. Steep canyon walls on one side, class 4 rapids on the other, extremely tight place for an aircraft hoist mission. The flight medic had to be lowered almost 250' to reach the guy.

From what I understand the patient is doing well.

Definitely scary!! Thank goodness he's okay, unlike the fatalities last year on the Wind. An unfortunate event that serves as a reminder as to how careful we all need to be. I know I definitely take for granted some of the "walk-in" areas I fish, so this is definitely a wake-up call. Most importantly, the guy is alright...for the most part.

I was fishing the Kalama river last Saturday up in the canyon and had gotten there at 3:30am started to walk down what I thought was the right path and to my surprise I was off by 10 ft or so and did a little tumble, thought I had bought the farm all the way down to the river but, was saved by some brush and a downed fir. Little scrapes but was close. Will never do that again. When I walked out later in the day I looked where I had "made my path" and it's pretty amazing I didnt end up for the worse. Fishing is fun, but it aint worth dying over just to get to YOUR fishin hole before the next chap.

It doesn't take a big drop to produce bad injuries. My husband and I spent many years with a local search and rescue team, and some of the worst injuries we saw were drops of less than 6'. He and a few other team members had a rock hill give way underneath of them during a search and fell about 6'. 8 hours later they were finally extracted and spent many nights in the hospital with broken bones.

Hey FinFansea, you guys do great work. With the 304th not around it's so nice to see your birds up flying!!

When it rains up there those rock cliffs become very, very slippery. I don't like fishing down in those canyons by myself when it rains. My adrenaline is pumping the whole time and is not a good feeling. If you go and it rains i find that tennis shoes are the best bet, leave your hard sole boots in the truck. Be careful
