My wife and I will be in Boston in September for our 10th Aniversary. Of course we have the RedSox on our agenda but we are looking for other things to do. Anybody from there?? Anybody travel there often??

Quincy Market..you can spend all day there...GREAT FOODS!

The Cheers Bar
Boston College...go look around, its great too. Theres so much to do. Just wing it, and ask around about great places to go. Also..make sure you eat at their PF Changs. For some reason its the best one ive ever been to.

Where to start?

Museum of science, JFK museum. New England aquarium... Jump a ferry to Marthas vinyard. House of blues. Bull and finch pub (cheers)
Boston pops/boston syphony orchestra.
Wouldnt be a worthy trip if you dont eat at Union oyster house. Fanuel hall marketplace, Theatre district. Dont go to Chinatown at night. Bostons north end has more generations of Italian eateries than any other place in America.
The park street church is a must see.

Old town via trolley will take you to many of these and more places.

Have fun, wish I was going too. I miss bean town.

Walking the freedom trail is cool. You catch the Old North Church, Old Ironsides, Paul Revere's house. Just North is Salem with all the old witch mueseums and 1700's shipping tycoon's houses. Glaucester and Rockport are quant coastal towns. Definately get a bowl of Chowdah at Legal seafoods, it is the best. RVW is right about the north end also. Plymouth plantation to the south is also interesting if you're into pilgrim history. Lexinton/Concord where the american revolution started is just to the west. You can see quite a bit within an hours radius of Boston.

Lots of history and red brick buildings.

14 year ago I was there when Cheers was still a hot show, I wanted to go see the bull and finch pub and sit in Norms seat. Besides for being a basement bar, it is nothing like the show, bar is to the wall, not an island, low ceilings, dark etc...... I was dissapointed.

I would stick to seeing the history stuff.

I agree, only the street view looks similar. I went there with a group while we were at a convention. One of the guys kept asking the waitress where Carla and Sam where. I thought she was going to pour a beer on his head....she only hears that a couple hundred times a day.

I had to make a pilgrimage to Walden Pond, which is just a nice spot unless you're a Thoreau-worshipper.

If you are there in September, make sure you get out of the city! It's much too beautiful that time of year to stay in the concrete jungle.
I grew up 30 miles to the west of the city, in the shadow of the venerable Mt. Wachusett and this area has that simple New England charm - town fairs, old-old-old graveyards, houses and families that have been there since the beginning of your American History textbook... it's something we don't get to fully grasp here in the west. I think it's remarkable.
But while in the city:
A. Do not attempt to drive, take the T.
B. Eat... anything in the restaurants of the North End, as heas been mentioned, but also get pizza and grinders wherever you are until you can't take anymore because there's nothing comparable out here.
C. Boston Common, the Public Gardens, the Swan Boats and all of that area is pretty good and gives you easy access to the Freedom Trail (the Bull & Finch is a waste of time though).
D. Quincy Market and Fannual Hall, along with Haymarket Square nearby are all over-rated in my opinion. Pike Street in Seattle is every bit as good...
E. Drink in the accents... one of the priceless sources of unintentional commedy that you can't touch out here, though I find when people say "Worshington" and "Maysure" (Washington and measure respectively) pretty funny as a part of life out here...
F. If it interests you, visit the colleges... Harvard and MIT off the Red Line, BU and BC down the Green Line... plus a fistful of others scattered about the area
G. If you can get in on a tour of Fenway, don't pass it up... if you can't get tickets, haggle hard with the scalpers... like to the point where you think they might take a swing at you... you'll get your tickets.
H. Harbor Cruises to places like George's Island are a good way to spend an afternoon
I. Don't know the exact demographic you fall in, but there's live music all over the city every night of the week, especially if you spend time in the Allston/Brighton burroughs... lots of kids getting drunk, which can be fun if you're into it. There's also a bar down Commonwealth Ave (the name escapes me right now) that has like 50-zillion different beers... taste each one, then take a cab back to the hotel.
J. For shopping, Newbury Street and Copley will keep the wife very busy... again, skip Fannual/Quincy if you can.
K. Street Musicians in and around Park St. Station and Government Center are one of the things that adds genuine charm to walking the city.
L. Depending on how late in the month you are there, the later the better, think about figuring a way to get to Cape Cod - I think you can take a ferry from Boston to Provincetown.
M. Check out the State House, MFA, Aquarium and Science Center as time and funding allows... I would almost say, in that order.

Alright, that's quite enough.

I am impressed at how much has already been shared on the thread here... are there really that many of us Northeastern Transplants on iFish? Wow.

While Boston is a great city, if I were there in September, I would hop on the Mass turnpike and get off exit 2, (The Berkshires) and enjoy some of the best folliage you'll ever see.It may be a bit early, but the colors should be great. Spend the night in a bed & breakfast and then drive back to the city the next day....you won't be disapointed. Of course I may be a little bias as I grew up and lived there for almost 20 years....

There is a good offshore bite towards the end of the summer. There are Bluefin Tuna to be caught in those waters same goes for Mako's and Swordfish.. You would have to charter a boat out of The Cape and motor out to the gulfstream. How does a VW sized bluefin sound..
