Re: coyotes...western oregon??????????
Lots of dogs in the Cascades and coast range. Philomath area is really good, with song dogs everywhere. Calling them is a little different, though. I agree with Nerta, a howler is a good tool for locating them, and although it can sometimes be a pain to learn, it's really worth the effort. I never go without my howler.
The other thing is the lack of visibility. It's so brushy over here that your sound doesn't carry very far, and you don't see them until they're right on top of you. I don't hunt them with a shotgun, but I've missed some that 00 buck would have taken - they were too hard to get onto with my scoped rifle. I may have to rethink the rifle/shotgun scenario.
While you're out bird hunting, be sure and watch for scat, then come back to those areas and set up. Another place is around the edges of farms, especially where there's sheep. Just be sure and ask permission.
I think once you get to pursuing them over on this side, you'll be amazed at how many there really are.
Good luck.
