Tuna Rumor
Anyone want to hear a tuna rumor? One that can not be substantiated, that is probably bogus, but one that a little bird whispered into my ear this morning?

Re: Tuna Rumor
Oh Roy, this is not a local rumor . But Rod says he doesn't want to hear it, and he is like one of the Little Rascal gang leaders , so I better not say anything or he'll take my lunch money.

I'm thinking that the mods will protect you. In fact, I'm sure of it. Besides, Rod's at work until.... tomorrow!
But don't worry, we can handle him. It's your rumor that we may not be able to handle.

Re: Tuna Rumor
Talked with my father in San Diego last week and he was trying to decide if they were going to try for yellowtail or stay in the bay and play with bay bass and sand bass. If ya think 40-60 miles out is a far way, you've got a bit more waiting to do.
How about a redeye flight to SoCal and day of fishing just to ease the withdrawals? The airfare is probably cheaper than boat fuel

Re: Tuna Rumor
ok guys and gals. On saturday aboard the siamez with Hawg caller we were out 26 or 27 miles and the water turned from green to blue. Rick looked over the port side and yelled tuna. I was sitting in the crows nest with him and I saw them also. Mind you I have never been tuna fishing yet. They were working a bait ball about 100 to 150 yards to our port. We had seen probably 20 to 25 fish jumping at the bait fish. I know this sounds unreal at this time of year but just ask rick (aka Hawg Caller). He pointed them out to me. We tried to hail some salty dogs cuz we had no tuna gear on board but no one answered his call.
This is a true account-Brian

Re: Tuna Rumor
Well Brian, if you say you saw them then you saw them.
All I have to say is.... anyone who claims to be a salty dog.... and sees tuna but has no tuna gear onboard....not a swimbait to throw or troll....not a single iron jig.....nothing at all to improvise....
That person deserves a full-on spanking in front on his peers!

Re: Tuna Rumor
Bernie - it's amazing how quick a halibut rod turns into a tuna rod. I didn't have any tuna gear on board for the halibut opener (the ONLY time I've made it offshore so far - WHICH by the way is GOING to change). But from now on....
Its May for crying out loud
If there are tuna out there, and it's due to global warming - then I'm all for it

I did have tuna rigging on board. In fact, I had one rod already rigged with a Mexican flag zuker. But that was Friday, not Saturday.

Re: Tuna Rumor
Brian, I thought you weren't going to publish this for fear of tar and feathering!
It would be easier to believe in a pod of rogue fish being out there had there been some sharks present.
I didn't see a one over the opener. One boat was even dragging hali through the water like sturgeon for hours without incident.
Last year you couldn't spill a drip of blood in the water without having company.
As Brian described these jumpers it sure sounded like a T-boil to me.
If the weather holds status quoe for another month I may have a chance at the 500.

Mark, I hope by June 1st..cause I have the heavy metal and plastics to throw at them. Jig sticks 7+, Jig reels 4-1..Always carry it with me. Ask dean about my tacklebox..plastic and metal jigs. Anytime, anywhere chasing birds, bait..fish can pop up...Overhead casting...what a concept..Try fighting a 150# Marlin in a 12' Valco pulling Rapalas for yellows ( chasing birds). Bring good binoculars..find the birds and bait ..you will find the fish. By the way nice butt on the opener. SIZE MATTERS GLENN

Re: Tuna Rumor
Calling The Blitz... Capt. Mike.....
I heard a hot rumour in the harbor from one of the commercial salmon fishermen. He said that there was a ton of bait and birds working offshore of Port Orford last week in 80 fathoms of water. The water according to him was BLUE. Like turquoise blue. The birds were pelicans, shearwaters, gooney birds and the tiny tuna birds.
This was before the big blow. He hasn't been back since then. Sounds definitely fishy. This was from a fisherman who landed tons of tuna last year.
Since we can't participate in the El Patron "sport" caught tuna contest, I thought I would pass it along to make the tuna holics go crazy. Mark Mc are you listening??? You could trailer your boat down and get them...

80 Fathoms, as in 9 - 10 miles out? Wow, might want to keep an eye on this rumor.

Re: Tuna Rumor
Well, I did see about 58 degrees on the surface at RBH last Friday... and I DID have all the necessary gear! Won't be long folks. I am visiting my Mom and Dad, and just stopped by a store called "The Longfin." I walked out a bit poorer. Let's see... leader material, crimps, swimbaits, what else? Oh yeah, clones, etc. etc...
I saw the new Shimano Tyrnos. It is cool, and a nice smooth lever drage with 5:1 retrieve. Too bad it is about $250. Next month.

Sensei San,
Please allow me to correct you. It is the North Pacific low that sends us our winds out of the NW, and decides when summer and TUNA! season begin.
Bowing respectfully,
Charlie.
