Default Turkeys on the north coast

I ran into some turkeys on the north coast this week. I think they are decendants from a transplant project 6-8 years ago. These birds were about ten miles from the original release site. I didn't think many survived all the coyotes in the area since I have not seen any for years. Anyone know if they are still transplanting them from eastern Oregon, or did they give up the project? I've known about them for years, but never hunted them because I didn't think there was much of a population base and hoped they would propogate into a substainable population.

It is my understanding that all Turkey transplants have been stopped. This is due to USF&W concerns over there potential impacts on native species.

I think that the USFWS is referring to competing with native species that are in the area. ie. grouse, quail, etc.

Oops....did we forget to think about that before we planted a bunch of them?? Jackson/Josephine/Douglas counties.....highest per sq mile populations of turkeys in the country, wonder if that's necessarily a great thing??

No opinion really, just wondering....I like to eat turkeys!!

From what I can tell the Audubon society put the brakes on the turkey transplants. They were afraid they would compete with native species such as grouse and quail. I think it's a valid point based our past track record, unless turkeys were native to NW Oregon. Does anyone have a historical reference? Maybe if we leave them alone for a while they will populate the area anyway . A good spring turkey population close to home would be cool.

Turkeys are an introduced species in Oregon. The Auduboners are concerned about competition & negative interaction with native bird species as well as impacts on prey species; i.e. snakes, small mammals, invertebrates, etc. The reality is that turkeys are established now in many parts of Oregon and will continue to spread on their own. I have heard reports of turkeys killing quail and grouse.
