I went to a local hole saturday morning to do a little bank fishing for some salmon. After stumbling my way around in the darkness for 20 minutes I found my fishing spot. Fished from 4:00 am till 12:00 and got only 1 nibble. I was chit chatting with a couple other fishermen about the funny characteristics of these elusive salmon and as I was chatting I decided to put on a pink worm (for some reason I put a package of these in my vest just before heading down to the river) I put this on my bobber setup which I was using for salmon. Anyhow, I whipped the gear back out in the river and played with it as it drifted down... twitching my pole every few seconds. About my third cast through the same slot as the bobber neared the tail out, I twitched it as it swung to the end and started drawing up the bait...WHAM! Flash of CHROME and soon the fish blasted out of the water, then up and down the river and cartwheel ariels and the whole 9 yards..... best show Ive seen by a steelhead bar none. The other folks around me and down the riverside thought the same thing. It had to be the brightest, hardest fighting/pulling headshakingest steelhead I have caught to date. It bent the hook a little to boot. I landed it and a fellow next to me unhooked it and we all gathered round to inspect this beauty. It was a native, and so we let it go on it's way. I now have instantly shifted my focus on the summer run steelhead instead of the dreary salmon. If I catch a salmon great but....it's steelhead from here on out until the silvers come in. This summer my goal is to hook into a steelhead while flyfishing. So, the report is..... the steelhead are out there and, as tasty as the spring salmon are..... I think we have forgotten what the summer steelhead feel like on the end of our rods. And I am now an official beleiver of the pink worm (it was my first steely on a pink worm) If any of you reading this were next to me down there..... you know who you are...... pics wouldnt've done justice for mr chrome.
