This is why we don\'t tell!!
For everyone who whines how people don't share information with other people, this is why we don't.
Last year I worked with a guy who desperately wanted to go east with my buddies and I where we hunt every year and have done it since I was 12 years old. It holds some monster bucks and some tremendous bulls all within a five mile radius. Many years have gone by shooting smaller animals and discovering new areas to find this honey hole and to me is very sacred. So finally I agreed to take him to the disgust of my buddies but I swore it wouldn't come back to haunt us. Well as it turned out he screwed us out of at least 11 bulls by not being a team player and moving to make sure he had a shot. I was so mad at him I could hardly see straight and vowed to never hunt with him again. I was however still nice to him and would be his friend and not mention the experience. Well we've talked a couple of times during the season and he even helped pack one of the bulls my buddy shot and it didn't seem like anything was wrong. He even mentioned going over there with a couple of his friends and I warned him not to do that and explained why. Well today I ran into his wife and asked how he was doing in hunting and she said she didn't know because he was over east somewhere near John Day and wouldn't be back until the weekend. Then to boot he's with 5 other guys!!!!! This is the only place he's hunted in that area so I know where he is. My buddies went there saturday to set up camp and I'll be there tomorrow. He better hope he doesn't run into me, it won't be a pleasent experience for him.
I'm so PO'd right now you could boil an egg on my face. Yes, I did fill my elk tag this year but my other two buddies hadn't and I have a deer tag still. It just goes to show you, you can't trust anyone but the ones with something to loose. I hope he's not there, but right now I'm very disappointed in all of this.

Re: This is why we don\'t tell!!
Sorry to hear about your experience Tailchaser.
I have tried to share the wealth with others several times by sharing my good public hunting finds with similar results. It really hurts to show up in your spot, only to find the friend you guided there with other people you may or may not know. I have had that happen at least 3 times and they hadn't said a word to me about going out.
I think that some people new to these pursuits do not even understand that their behavior is a violation of friendship. It is certainly discouraging and I just don't know of enough public hunting opportunity to disclose much anymore.
At least with the big river in our backyard there is plenty of room for everyone and it is fun to help others get some success out there.
Good luck on your hunt. I'll have empathy for you if you run into you "buddy" over there.

Re: This is why we don\'t tell!!
Well he's not new to the theory. Last year a friend of mine found our vehicle and figured heck, he's a buddy and decided to join in the area with 4 other people. The guy that's there now had a fit about others coming in on our area (and it was his first time there). It seems that it's not ok if it's not him. He preached etiquette to this guy and look what's going on? I have an understanding for a guy who I don't know and hikes into my area to hunt and finds it on his own, but not this stuff. It just makes me bitter.
I know when I show up and if he sees me he's going to crap. Then after he hears what I have to say he'll crap again.

Re: This is why we don\'t tell!!
Thats why I don't take anyone to my honey holes unless I've been hunting with them for a while.
A few ethics rules I live by and also teach my kids to live by.
1. Never go into an area that someone else has shown you, unless you ask first.
2. If someone beats you to a spot (closed road, trail, whatever), find another spot. Don't go in behind them and screw thier hunt up.
3. Road hunters suck!
4. If a road is closed, it's closed!
5. private property is just that, ask first.

Five other people? That sucks. I hope they are not all bugling in your area. One bonehead with a call is bad enough.

Re: This is why we don\'t tell!!
I feel your pain. Both hunting and fishing spots have been ruined by boneheads.Even after trying to explain very clearly how it is,they still turn the knife inside ya.No more.If it is not the circle of trusted ones, then it is silent.Too bad we have to learn the same thing, and nobody thinks charecter matters today.I had 3 fishing holes and 2 guaronteed hunt spots eliminated from my list. One on this board.
Mark and the dog.

Re: This is why we don\'t tell!!
I have always been a believer that finding and learning the area is half the experience. I dont think people should post on ifish which rock to fish behind or which drainage to hunt in.
I have no problem telling you I hunt in the Ochoccos, or in the Wilson unit. These are very big pieces of real estate and if you want to come on out and walk as many miles as I do to learn the ground, help yourself, but dont expect me to tell you I was in XXXXXX creek when I saw the trophy last week.
I have been lucky to have a hunting partner that dislikes sitting in the truck as much as I do, and is willing to put on the boots and get away from the crowds. We have been chasing animals together since high school, and suspect we will do the same until our strollers dont allow us to get off the road.
I have taken a few people hunting in my sweet honey holes. One of them I knew was to lazy to ever do it on his own unless I was there to help him, one was a brother-in-law from the east coast who wouldnt be back unless I was there. We discussed ahead of time the consequences of me ever seeing them or their buddies on my shooting stumps.
Explain in great detail ahead of time, we will have a great time here this season, we should fill some tags, but if you come back here in the future without my permission, nobody will ever find your body when I bury you under the stump we are shooting off of this season, after I empty my gun in your carcass. This way it doesnt leave much room for interpretation and they usually remember it when they get that urge to take a few buddies hunting in your spot.

Re: This is why we don\'t tell!!
Well the conclusion to my story is this:
When my buddy went over two days ahead of me to set up our camp, guess who was in it?? Of course it was that guy. Well he was plum surprised to see my friend and his first comment was "I thought you guys weren't coming over here this year?" To say the least my buddy said it was as wierd as talking to an ex-girlfriend with your wife next to you. Anyhow, he was beginning to set up camp where we always do. My buddy mentioned that I was coming in a day and probably wouldn't like it if he was here. So my friend left to scout out another camping spot and drove back by in a couple hours and he was gone. I had big plans on having quite a talk with him when I saw him but I never did. I did see his truck however and wasn't pleased about the area it was in. He wanted to go on a late season deer hunt with me this year, but it'll be surprising when I tell him he isn't going to join us.

Re: This is why we don\'t tell!!
I had a similar exprience with a f r i e n d who I thought I could trust. A group of us hunt in the coast range for elk when we don't draw our eastern tags. The ridge we hunt is called No Tellum Ridge. To make a long story short the very next year he brought a few of his buddies in there to hunt. They killed some nice bulls. It ruined our friend ship. I'll have to say this though, the guy's he took in there probably wanted to kill him. Because you have to be one crazy sob to go in there. The elk only come out in qtrs. Wapiti6x6 will agree with me because he killed his first elk up there and a wall hanger at that.
