Sauvie Island Pheasant Report 9/16
Got there about 4:00 AM... was to early still tags left at 5:30-6:00. First bird at 6:50, 2nd at 7:20.
Two shells expended two roosters dead.
Kicked out 3 or 4 more walking back to the truck. Maybe 10 guys waitin for permits at the check station at 8:00.
Largest bird was a heavy with 22 inch tail. NICE big fat bird (for a stocker).

Which station do you check in at. I just got a springer this winter and am ready to hunt. Need details on how it goes.

Re: Sauvie Island Pheasant Report 9/16
No luck for Captain Dan! and me today as we were the late show.
Got there about 9:00 - 9:30 with about a dozen folks on the wait list .
Wouldn't you know it. 5 minutes after Dan had to leave I got my spot as did 5 others  .
I hunted for about 2 hours with no luck.
The day was a sucess anyway as it was my pup's first day afield. She did great for her first time out, but alas, no birds  .
A nice fella at the check in station was kind enough to give me a wing to train her. At least next time she will know what one smells like .
UG, let me know if you want to go Thursday. I still have a tag  .
The weather did start to break at about 11:15. It was a nice change from the rain .
I only heard about half a dozen shots fired while I was hunting. Officers report about 250 birds released that are yet unacounted for, save UG's 2 .
Good luck and be safe out there...
Mr. Fisherman
Yes, I hunt too

Re: Sauvie Island Pheasant Report 9/16
Redbull this is a first class chicken shoot. Pen raised pheasants are released a couple times a week (perhaps more) on East Side Unit of Sauvie's WMA. More specifically they are concentrated in the hunt units that have corn, milo, alfalfa and blackberries. With a 'fee pheasant tag' (purchased at any *** dealer) you can hunt Sauvie along with some of the other WMA's during the listed fee pheasant hunts. The one at Sauvie runs until the 29th of September.
There is a limited entry of 75 hunters at a time on the area. Permits are only available at the East Side check station
Simply go out and look for good cover and let the dog go to work. Some areas seem to get more birds than others, but you never know where they are going to dump them off at.
Shooting time begins as listed in the hunting regs and ends at 600pm. Check the bird regs for more details and call ODFW for direction, maps, etc. Good luck, it can be a lot of fun.

Re: Sauvie Island Pheasant Report 9/16
Went out with Driftboater for a couple hours late this morning/early afternoon. Got 3 up that we could not get a shot at and finally ended up with one for driftboater.
Will probably hit it again tomorrow.

Re: Sauvie Island Pheasant Report 9/16
Went out Tuesday evening. First time my lab has hunted roosters. We killed two on the flush and Shadow (my lab) ran a crippled bird down in the corn. All, in all a good first outing for the dog and two hunters. BTW you can pick-up entry permits at the Willow Bar parking area and the main office.

Re: Sauvie Island Pheasant Report 9/16
Lured,
Thanks for taking the time and the info.
It will be next week before I get a chance, but I'm really looking forward to it.
I got the gun out of the closet and the dog looked at me, checked his calendar, looked at me again with confusion, shrugged and said 'I'm in!'
Thanks.

Re: Sauvie Island Pheasant Report 9/16
For doves/september goose/ and the fee pheasant, it is everday from the shooting time listed in the regs until 600pm. After the close of dove season, the area is closed until ducks open up on the 12th for the usual every other day schedule.
