Fort Rock Question??
Hi,
I am venturing off of the Salty Dogs board to ask a question for anyone who has hunted the Fort Rock Area. I have hunted this area in the past, but have mostly concentrated on the areas to the western side, around Chemult, well I was checking some maps out and it looks like there may be some prime area on the Eastern side of the unit. Loks like some Agricultural areas surrounded bye sage and junipers. The question I have is, I am taking my 12 year old on his first hunt in this area, can anyone suggest any place on the east side in more open areas that might be good?
I am headed over Monday for a scouting trip and I want to try that side instead this year, not had much luck the last couple trips on the west side!
Thanks in advance!

Re: Fort Rock Question??
I have to say if you are going hunting in that area you have to eat at a place called the cowboy dinner tree, it is about 5 miles out of Silver lake, and I can't talk this place up. It's been 2 years since we hunted over there and ate but for 16.95 you get the best dinner you'll ever eat, First is a salid that is nothing big, then comes soup with homemade sweet rolls that melt in your mouth, that right there is a meal in itself then come what looks like a pot roast that is no joke. This big boy is aleast 26oz. it's so tender and after you take a couple of slices off of that thing comes a cobbler of some sort. This also inc. quart fruit jars filled with ice tea or lemonade. The phone # 1-541-576-2426 or 1-541-536-1303

Re: Fort Rock Question??
Sturgn,
Be sure and call ahead for reservations. And the price has gone up to $18, but it's still worth it. They absolutely know what to do with a dead cow! We always eat there the first night if possible, then live off the leftovers for the next three days. No kidding.
Hey, some of us old Silver Lakers need a report on the fire damage when you get back. I haven't been over there since before the fire, and I'm headed to Northside for my deer hunt. We spend a lot of time up on Winter Rim and all over the Silver Lake/Thompson Res area, so we're kinda holding our breath to see which of our favorite areas burned up. Let us know how you did hunting when you get back, and what's left of our woods over there.
Good luck - stay safe.

Re: Fort Rock Question??
I haven't been up there for about 3 weeks but most years aroud this time the lower unit around sand creek has good prospects didn't draw so someone else might as well try our stomp'n grounds this year

Re: Fort Rock Question??
Thanks for the info on Sand Creek ,when I was down there last week, there was a bunch of dead does along the road in the area between Military crossing Rd. and Silver lake rd. Man I tried to drive across the military crossing and about rattled my truck apart, the wash boards are bad in there! I think I am gunna start where Ive hunted in the past just west of the Chemult for day 1, then move down to the area around Klamath marsh for day 2. Then go from there for the rest of the week, we are gunna be there from Friday night, through the following Thursday! I just want to get my kid on a buck dont care how big, hes been hunting with me since he was 2 and been waiting for this for along 10 years.

Re: Fort Rock Question??
Hey Sturgeon....
I've hunted Fort rock before & been quite successful (yay!). Try around Big Hole - go thru La Pine and turn east on hwy 31 (?)...
go (I think) 21 miles. There's a sign....
We've hunted in & around there and done well. Nothing monsterous, but they're in there. It usuallytakes a few days for the deer to settle down. We've seen the majority of the deer within 1 mile of the hwy, too.
Good luck, let me know how ya do if ya go there, okay?

Re: Fort Rock Question??
Well heres the report.
Sat, Sun, Monday we hunted around Chemult where we have hunted in the past, 3 very experienced hunters and my son on his first hunt, we saw a total of 6 deer, no horns! only seen one deer hanging in all the camps up there.
Tues we spent over around Silver Lake hunting Junipers and sage brush, saw 8 yotes and 3 bobcats, 6 deer in alfalfa feilds and 1 buck with 4 does right smack in silver lake at the cemetary.
Wed we spent crawling around Big Hole, that place is cool, but hunted very heavy this year saw no deer!
Thursday we spent over by Corrall mountain in the middle of the unit, saw a couple does and one that was shot right on the road.
The big thing I noticed this year was nobody was hunting almost everybody I saw was driving the roads.... Oh well!
I am headed back over by myself Monday for the last couple days, I think I am gunna concentrate on the Juniper/sage mountouns over between Silver Lake and Christmas valley sure looks like there should be some big bucks in there to me!
Thanks for all your guys advice, I had a great trip with the kid and we saw alot of new country!
