Default eTrex Vista

I'm going to retire my Magellan Trailblazer and I'm looking hard at the eTrex Vista.

Alongwith better computer compatability, I'm especially interested in the digital compass and the barometric altimeter. And, of course, it ought to be better able to pick-up satalites through the forest canopy.

I'd be interested in any input/experience/recommendations any of you wish to share as I make my choice. Of some concern to me is the fact that Garmin is currently (for the first time as far as I know) offering a $50 rebate and there are tons of these on e-bay . . . . I wonder if Garmin is going to dump the Vista for something "new and special." I tried to e-mail them but I could not get their website contact to work nor could I find their e-mail address.

Oh, BTW, I suppose the Magellan would be available if anyone is interested. It was $350 new and is in excellend condition . . . 'just older (as technology goes) and limited as far as the things noted above that I'm interested in now. Don

I love my 'traditional' eTrex, but unless they have changed the way satellites send their signal, all GPS' i have seen struggle in the dark timber. (some of that I think maybe due to mountains, not just the trees)

Yes, Lured-in, I understand . . . . but, the newer models are better at picking-up the signal . . . that Magellan was $350 new and, unless you wanted to spend $1000, it was top-of-the-line when I bought it. My expectations and technology just outgrew it . . . it's still a good unit that someone can get some good use out of. In fact, my wife says there’s a fellow at her office that is interested in it. Because of the technology advances, they only sell (e-Bay) for around $80, the last time I checked.

MYLES! I owe you!!!! Thanks a ton! I followed your advice and I'm convinced that the MAP76 is the replacement for the Vista. And, I’m certain I’ll like the larger screen as well. I also tried the Garmin page again and this time it "let" me send them an e-mail . . . which they haven't answered yet. Anyway, after doing some quick research on the MP76, I logged onto e-Bay and there were two of them . . . one had four bids on it but they hadn’t yet met the minimum bid to void the buy-it-now @ $309.00 . . . . I bought it right out from under them for the very reasonable price of $309. GPS4Fun wanted $379 and the msrp is 499.99. I just happened to check-in here to see if anyone had answered my post and within a few minutes of your response, I had done my research, made my decision, located a great deal and bought it. My wife is even happy that I finally got off the fence re what she was going to get me for Christmas . . . .

Don, I have the Map 76S and love it. I think you will be very happy with the versatility and ruggedness of your new unit. Lots of local retail places carry the accessories for it if you need something last minute to. Enjoy! Sounds like you got it for a great price.

Thanks, Predator Dawg! Actually, I think I'm getting the 76 . . . not the "S" . . . but, I'm still pleased. Don

Don,

I have a MAP76 and love it but wish I had waited for the 76s.
The 76S has the barometer and altitude sensor which could be very handy for keeping a watchful eye on the weather.

If you are set on the 76 maybe we could work something out as I was looking for a way to trade up.

My 76 is only about 2 months old and I have the original box and all the paperwork.

Drop me an email if you like...

Ray

'Sorry to be so late responding, Ray. It WAS the 76S that I wanted and I have gotten that model ordered and on its way to me. Thanks for the offer anyway.

Thanks to all, especially Myles, for your input.

Don
