Grizzly Unit
Does anyone have experience with the Grizzly Unit for buck rifle season? I have hunted Ochoco for elk and seen a lot of nice muleys, I guess this would be true for Grizzly, too. Do most people spot and stalk in the Grizzly unit?
If anyone wants advice on where I have seen the muleys in the Ochoco, let me know.
Thanks and good luck!

Re: Grizzly Unit
David, you're new to the board... how about a story? (thought you'd get away without it, huh?)

Re: Grizzly Unit
Once upon a time
A couple of years ago I was fishing the Metolious from an island of tall grass on my knees to not spook the fish rising in the seem below me. I tried and tried, but the fish would not take my fly. I was just about to head up river when I heard a loud noise across the stream in the bushes. Out jumped a doe who was feeding. It was so peaceful, sitting in the grass watching the fish rise and this beautiful creature feed just a few yards from me. She eventually walked into the river and waded across to the other side and wandered out of site. I only caught one fish that morning, but it was the best trip all year!!
Anyone have information on the Grizzly Unit? Any fellow Toyota LandCruiser owners out there?
Cheers,
David

Re: Grizzly Unit
I would love to here some info on the nice muleys you have seen in the Ochocos. I have deer hunted there in the past during rifle season and have taken several smaller bucks, but have yet to run into the grand dad in the Ochocos.

Re: Grizzly Unit
Diggerdan -
Last year during our cow elk hunt we saw several large 4 points, probably close to 100 deer and 20 bucks, most of which were in the Juniper flats bordering timber country. We generally stick to the far east end of the unit near the John Day river.
Good luck. Let me know if you have any tips for the Grizzly unit.
Thanks,
David.

Re: Grizzly Unit
Killed a fork a few years back on Grizzly Mountain (big three-point was hiding behind a tree unbeknownst to me). Missed a carrot-head the year prior. Beware the easily-accessible public lands. Good luck!

Re: Grizzly Unit
Fishbone -
Thanks. I have always noticed Grizzly Mt. when we drive from Madras to Prineville, but it looks like mostly private land? What is the hunting pressure like in the unit? Beware public lands, I guess you mean pressure is high with lots of yahoos Also, did you spot and stalk or was it road hunt or...?
Thanks for the insight.

Re: Grizzly Unit
We have hunted Grizzly for the past 4 years for anterless elk. Most of our hunting is on the east side of the mountain and is all private land. In fact, most of the land near the mountain, that I am aware of, is private.
Great deer and not bad elk country. If you can get access, you have a good chance to score. good luck, drifter.

Re: Grizzly Unit
I hunted with fishbone up on grizz those couple years as we had access to part of the mtn. off of 26 there. We tried to search out some other areas of the unit but didn't do enough research-all we found were the yahoos that drive around in pickups taking turns being the "shooter" in back. We've since moved on to another unit. But I'm sure there's plenty of good hunting area with public access............anyone?
