Default coyotes?

Was curious if anybody had any info on calling in coyotes. What calls work best and how to properly use? Would like to get the wife some experience in shooting so she can eventually go after the big game. Thanks in advance for any info!!!

A dieing rabbit call, and when they are in shooting rang, have a mouse call taped onto your gun. That works good because if the coyote is walking and you are waiting for him to stop, just tap that mouse call once and he should stop and you should be able to get a shot off at him.
Also you should have a 12 GA with some #4 buck loaded up so if the coyote does not go down on the first shot, you will be there to back her up with the shotgun.

Oncorhynchus,

I use a Sceery cottontail call since it works both here and in the desert. A friend has a Faulk call, and swears by it as well. I think the emotion put into the call is more important than brand or design. The old adage "become the rabbit" has served me well. I scream like I'm really scared and about to get eaten. I also remember that rabbits don't have big lungs, so I keep my screams short and close together. I scream about two lung-fulls of air, then wait a couple of minutes and go for it again.

My wife is an avid coyote hunter ever since that first day when I called one in about 35 feet from her. She missed it, but she was so excited she was literally dancing. (Glad I had taught her about firearm safety and muzzle control) She kept saying, "Now I know what you're talking about when you say hunting is exciting. Oh my gosh!"

We, like you, use coyote hunting as a way to tune up for deer and elk season, and to break the doldrums of off-seasons. We also hunt them in our duck hunting areas as a way of predator control.

Opps, sorry for the long post. I got excited, I guess.

I do it the lazy way. I bought a tape of a deer in distress and a portable tape player. They make them for rabbits etc. but this actually does doubles duty. If you have a doe tag and go to the right area does will come in to investigate and stomp their feet to ?scare off? the predator and bang! I picked up a stuffed rabit at Goodwill for something for them to focus on. If your hunting alone that is an advantage of the tape, the sound comes from next to the decoy, so instead of a coyote coming in looking in your direction he's looking at your decoy. Just watch your back for big kittys.

have fun

I seem to have the best luck early in the morning. I just use a Sceery Jack Rabbit call in combination with a coaxer when they are holding up. We have killed many Yotes as close as 10ft with #4 buck, very exciting! Yote hunting will really help fine tune your shooting skills! Good look and shoot straight!

It's no big surprise, but most of the places that have ducks also have a pretty good crop of coyotes. During duck season I hunt birds in the morning, then when they settle in for the middle of the day, I grab my rifle or some double-00 buck and start sneakin' and squeekin'. Kind of a combo hunt.

Tooooo much fun!
