Mutulation marks on Steelhead??????
Anyonw know what all the different hatchery released steelhead mutlation marks (i.e. maxillary jaw bone and fin clips) for the different rivers are on the coast.
It seams as though the last half dozen fish I have caught appear to have different fin clips than all than the majority??
I am just curious as to the where the fish are strayiny from?

Re: Mutulation marks on Steelhead??????
Depending on what river you are fishing, there can be as many as four or five different clip methods used. Some denote different year classes and others denote different hatchery stocks.

Those with maxillary clips along with adipose clips are broodstock fish.

Re: Mutulation marks on Steelhead??????
In November I caught a summer steelhead that had a adipose and ventral fin clip. Don't remember which ventral fin it was. I'll have to go back and look at the picture. What does this extra clip mean?

Re: Mutulation marks on Steelhead??????
What is a maxillary clip and what does it look like? Does anyone have any pictures of this??? I've ran into some pretty pathetic clip jobs lately.....some bad enough to make me release a couple hatchery steelhead just because I didn't want the headache of trying to explain why I kept the fish. Re: Mutulation marks on Steelhead??????
Dokotan: the maxillary bone is the one on the upper outside part of the jar. This is the bone is an elongated tear drop. Many people don't ever relize that it is missing.

Botched?? Botched????
A team of ten or so can put out about 25,000 or more per an 8 hour shift.
I know I would have a hard time getting 2,500 perfect clips per day. Hell, you can barely see the adipose fin let alone get the tiny bugger in a position to clip it.

Re: Mutulation marks on Steelhead??????
OK, totally off topic guys.....
Looking for induvidual river fin clips for steelhead. It used to be that each river had it own fin clip code; i.e. say left pectoral was the so and so river and left ventral is a different river. I know that the maxilary clips signify wether it is of hatchery or wild brood stock origin.
So, please guys help me out, what are the fin clip demographics for the rivers that u fish????

Re: Mutulation marks on Steelhead??????
Siletz broodstock have a left Maxillary clip.
I'm not sure about this, but I think Alsea broodstock have a right Max clip. I caught one last week, but I can't remember which side was clipped.
What other clips have you experienced lately?

Re: Mutulation marks on Steelhead??????
Starting last year all winter steelhead being raised for the Nestucca system are adipose plus maxillary clipped. The wild stock fish are right max. and the Alsea stock are left max. You wont see these returns until next winter unless you catch a 1 salt fish that returned as a jack.
If they are adipose plus right ventral clipped then they are probably a Nestucca summer steelhead. Adipose only and they are a Siletz summer steelhead or a Nestucca fish with a regenerated ventral which is fairly common.
Not sure about the other North Coast steelhead programs?

Re: Mutulation marks on Steelhead??????
According to the board at the NF Alsea hatchery they have left and right max fish coming back. The two salt fish are already here. I've seen several broodstock 7-9 pounders this year, have also seen both the left and right max fish. The remaining ad-only fish are three salters. Again, this is what I read at the hatchery... Joe

Re: Mutulation marks on Steelhead??????
Depending on the where or what fish is being released there are many clips. The Clack has fish marks that include: AdRv AdRm AdRv AdLm AdRm AdRv AdLm AdRv AdLm AdLm. Thats how many different clip combos that they have for this year which will be returning to the Clack hatchery and Eagle Creek hatchery. When there are like two AdLm some are released one place while others are released in another location or some are released later or earlier than others.

Re: Mutulation marks on Steelhead??????
To the best of my Knowledge Dakotan it goes something like this, no adipose fin = hatchery fish. No adipose fin AND no left ventrical = Broodstock.
I did see something here a while back that Scott Amerman wrote about that jaw bone deal but I don't remember what it was about. Amerman or even David Johnson would probably be the ones to ask if it isn't in the synopsis. Hope this helps..

Salmonator,
I was talking about the Alsea stock winters being raised at Cedar Creek Hatchery for the Nestucca and Three Rivers. They originaly came from Alsea hatchery so they are still called Alsea stock.

Joe, Gotcha  But I have to ask, why on earth do they still feel the need to put Alsea strain fish in any river besides the Alsea??
