Re: Body of OSU student found
I had a class with her, she always seemed like a nice girl. My condolences go out to her loved ones and sorority sisters. :depressed:

Re: Body of OSU student found
You never know how close things like this will actually come to you.
Gina was very close friends with two of my good friends at OSU. One of her sorority sisters is good friends with one of my best friends, and I can tell you a lot of people in Corvallis are really shook up. I didn't even know her and it's bothering me...

Re: Body of OSU student found
It's a very sad day and my heart goes out to the families. I had the pleasure of meeting Don her father and his brother Dave who is a game biologist. It a small and tragic world we live in.
Hopefully she is in a place that I'll look forward to being after I pass.

Re: Body of OSU student found
Its really a sad time for OSU students now. I knew of her, and have a lot of mutual friends of her and her boyfriends. They were both very nice and jubilant people. My thoughts and prayers go out to them and thier families.
What I do not like however is how the media feels compelled to mention that an argument caused her to wander off. Her boyfriend is going through enough right now with losing someone he loves and the situation that caused her to wander off. He shouldnt have to worry about the media making him look bad. He has been ruled out as a suspect.

Re: Body of OSU student found
What a tragedy. What else can you say?
I have to ask, when will the students learn that Shasta is an extremely bad idea? Unfortunately, Nina isn't the first that has lost her life at Shasta, but also unfortunate is that she won't be the last.
I spoke with Sean Matsuda the day before he left to go to Shasta in 2000...he never came back. Members of my fraternity where the ones who found him and did CPR all the way back to the dock. OSU student's were shocked and promised to put an end to the annual Shasta trip, but it was all smoke and know we've lost another young person to this lake.
It's INCREDIBLE to me how events like these get forgotten so quickly. My heart goes out to the family. What a damn shame.

Re: Body of OSU student found
JL -
You're right - This has been absolutely devastating for him. The fact is he and Gina had tiffs and for her to walk off in a huff was an understood way for her to calm down. The way it sounds leads people to unfairly speculate, and he has absolutely been cleared of being a part of her death.
By all reports, she was not drunk at the time she disapeared. There were around 500 people in the area.
The sorority has been closed, and the girls are having a really hard time adjusting to this. They have been advised by both the Sheriff's department and the fraternity system not to speak, so they have as a rule been avoiding campus and situations where people will ask them things.
The only update is that the body was discovered during a grid search about 300 yards from where the houseboats were moored. The island is heavily wooded with steep terrian.
They said there was no obvious sign of death, but the remains were found in some Manzanita brush off any trail.
The coroner is supposedly not going to be finished with the results of an autopsy until Mondayish, so it will be a few days before they might find she died of natural (or not) causes.
The Shasta County Sheriff's Department is being very cautious and deliberate about the investigation.
As sad as it is, it is hoped she might have had a medical problem that led to her death as opposed to some sort of foul play...
It is surprising to me how little coverage this is getting in the Portland area - At OSU it is huge news, as Gina was a very outgoing person who was very active on campus and was known and liked by many people.
For Gina:
NATIVE AMERICAN PRAYER
I give you this one thought to keep-
I am with you still, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on the snow,
I am sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awake in the morning's hush
I am the swift, uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at nights.
Do not think of me as gone-
I am with you still- in each new dawn.
May she rest in peace.
Gary

Re: Body of OSU student found
Well, as it turns out, my girlfriend roomed with Gina for a term. They were in the same sorority. What a horrible thing to happen to great person. Keep Gina's family and friends in your prayers, they are having a very difficult time right now.

Re: Body of OSU student - update - suicide
CM- I think you are wrong. This doesnt sound fishy but oh so terribly wrong still. the number two cause of deaths among college students is suicide.
Depression is becoming even more prevelant among the younger adults of our country due to bleak employment outlook, high cost of education, and the great demands put on students from all areas of their lives.
With so much drinking going on why wasnt alcohol a part of her death? perhaps she went because it was expected of her by the sorority but she didnt want to be there? was that why she had the spat withher boyfriend...he was drinking and she thought it too much? add this to something else she may have been depressed about and hiding from others and you have a good recipe for suicide.
there are obvously details that were not released and I respect the families choice in that matter. If they are willing to accept that it was suicide, I am not the one to question.
Oddly enough her death occured during national suicide awareness week.
My prayers and condolences go out to the family and friends who have lost so dearly.
Paul
