My brother is going their this weekend to finish his bow hunting adventure. He was there labor day and said weather became hot on friday and stayed hot. animals not very active and you can only ride motorcycles on the roads and not off road or paved road (middle fork john day river rd). according to forrest service guy he talked with. Has seen lots of deer with a couple nice bucks but mostly does and fawns and forkies. good luck.

We hunted Elk there last year, and had a good hunt. We didn't draw this year, but will go over for a spike only hunt and scout country for next year. good luck.

Thanks for the reply Elkrig. Please drop me a note when your brother returns with a report.

Was there any fire closures in the area?

As always appreciate the responses...Corlyn, I have heard that it is good unit for elk as well. The party we hunted with from John Day last year said that they hunt elk over there too. Didn't run into any elk during our deer hunt as it only lasted about 2 hours with bagging nice 3x5 and 3x3 bucks.

Default Desolation Buck Fever

I'm getting all excited about the upcoming deer season as I'm sure all of you are too! We pulled Desolation Unit again this year and after last year's success I can't wait to go back!

Does anyone know what the forest conditions are over there at this time? Do we need to be concerned about fire closures?

Also, my neighbor and I would like to take our motorcycles over there to ride and possibly do some scouting on. Do you think that there would be a problem with that if we stuck to the main roads?

Anyone who wants to share information or stories on the Desolation Unit, I'd love to hear it. Happy hunting!
