Tag your elk!
I was stopped by a state PD over the weekend to check for tags, I was OK but he told me he had just ticketed a guy for "creating a new road". While trying to drive into the woods with his diesel 4x4 to retrieve his UN-tagged elk the stater was driving by and heard the comotion.
Total: $600 fine!
tag em when you get em

Re: Tag your elk!
Was the fine for not tagging the animal yet, or for creating a new road?

Re: Tag your elk!
I got checked Saturday for the first time in a long time. I was following my brother back to camp when a gammie stops him and of course I am now stuck in the road behind him and the gammie. When the gammie is talking to my brother, un-beknownst to me, my brother tells the gammie that the guy behind her has an untagged doe in the back of his truck.
When the gammie walks back to check on this doe , I must have had the same thought as I told her I couldnt believe she didnt bust the guy I was following, as I saw him stuffing a doe in the back of his truck.
Turns out the gammie knows my other brother the gammie and we all had a good laugh when she figured out who we were and we were yanking her chain. It was all in fun
I have been checked maybe 7 or 8 times in my life while hunting, and 4 of them are all within a mile of the same spot, on the same road. I have only drove down this stretch of road maybe 25 times in my life. They seem to have this stretch of road well covered.

Re: Tag your elk!
I read on another BB board that one guy killed an elk next to the road and fearing someone else would come along and try and take his elk. BTW He shot the elk along an established road and was only 20min from his rig he went back got his rig and when he got back low and behold someone had tagged his elk and was skinning it out for him. He stearnly encouraged them that he knew it wasn't their elk but they refused to leave since they didn't see his name on it! Well they guy that shot the elk asked then how did my tag get in the elks mouth. The bandits promptly collected their gear and left.
Just because you tag your elk doesn't mean the tag will be on it when you get back. Try and hide for the above mentioned reasons. F&G will understand.

Re: Tag your elk!
It was my understanding the combined fine was $600. The guy may have had a tag for the elk but hadn't done the "paperwork".

Re: Tag your elk!
Good point kfisher, but I had run into this guy (actually a group) and that wasn't the case here. I started following a blood trail and ran into them about 100 yards away. I talked to 2 of them on their way out but had heard at least one kid's voice in the woods, so there wasn't any problem like leaving an unattended kill. The elk was only about 100-125 yards off the road, no reason not to pack it out instead of driving through the woods and accros a creek into a meadow.

Re: Tag your elk!
Myles,
I probably wasn't clear always tag your animal and put it in a spot that maybe isn't as obvious so sombody else can't find it. Like you said you easily blood trailed the animal (sorry had to edit) a less honest person with nobody around may remove a tag and claim as there own.
Tread lightly and don't make any new roads could be expensive.
Sorry Myles if you read this already I think your honest no reason not to. I had a typpo and made it look like I thought you were dishonest sorry.

if i am going to leave any animal in the woods i always leave an article of clothing on it.tag it and put the tag in my pocket.
most importantly i cut off half of an ear and sometimes the toung.that way if someone else tries to claim it i have the match to the ear in my pocket that the gammie can look at and match.whitch makes it mine.

Re: Tag your elk!
Madwizer-
thats one good idea, just one thing. If someone is so stupid to go and tag anothers hunters kill, thats just asking for trouble . If I have to leave my game behind to go get someone or what ever I have to leave for for some reason, I tag it and cut the head off and take it with me. If someone trys to take your elk, Its going to have no head to tag it. AND if you still have trouble, just have one of your buddys get to a phone and call the gammie for theft

Re: Tag your elk!
Great idea MadWizard, In evaluating the two options I think I'll go with cutting off the ear and possibly the tongue. Those are much lighter and easier to transport than the whole head.
Good call.
Only three more day until two weeks of fishing on Kodiak

Re: Tag your elk!
That is a great idea taking part of the tongue or ear! Has a cousin last year bull hunting in the Ochocos that got pinched for the exact same thing. Killed the bull on his way back to the rig just before dark and gutted it, but was afraid to leave his tag on it. When heading back to the bull the next morning, before bailing over the edge he was checked by a gamie and was honest with him stating the he killed a bull and was heading in after it. The warden checked him and after handing the gamie the elk tag he handed back his elk tag along with with a large ticket!

Re: Tag your elk!
I have never lost a bull to another hunter but i always take the head regardless of how far i have to go. I have left them overnight in diffferent places and no one ever bothered them because the head was gone. Juts my 2cents worth.
