weather for Newport Fri and Sat
There seems to be a slight trend for the worse on Friday & Saturday.
Does the wind tend to kick up in the afternoon. If you get out early enough and the fishing is good at the ranch you could be back in by noon or so couldn't you? I know that it is hard to say unless you are there, but for you dogs who launch there all the time what is the norm
Made the call to go another day, don't want top get caught
in a bad situation. So will sit this opener out.
Good luck

Re: weather for Newport Fri and Sat
Yes, the wind, if it isn't howling all night long, does tend to kick up in the afternoon. Saturday is looking terrible. Friday could be okay. Hard to say.
1) Beware the SouWestern (don't ask me how I know this) and
2) If you are at the ranch and it kicks hard, it's a LOOOOOONG way back (don't ask me about my very first trip to the ranch)

Re: weather for Newport Fri and Sat
You probably have to figure at least 1.5 hours maybe 2 hours each way on Saturday with that forecast to the Ranch, how fast can you limit the boat on halibut?
As waterdog has pointed out to me today a couple times, its the south wind and west swell that is gonna make it feel like we are on agitate cycle in the washing machine.
I am not real fond of that Saturday forecast.

At a true 4 and 5 I'd bet more like 2 to 3 hrs depending on the boat.

Re: weather for Newport Fri and Sat
The wind is shifting from the NW to S then SW. Also there is an increasing trend. Not good. Weather Vortex and actually today was the day (should have been here yesterday syndrom).
Trying to beat the weather is a receipe for pain and frusteration. Typically the afternood wind show degrades conditions and it happens pretty fast. My least favorite wind direction by far is anything from the South.
If you choose to try to get out early and beat the afternoon wind show consider what it will be like to fish in the conditions you are heading into. If you aren't able to enjoy it and have fun why do it? They are only fish and there will be more days later in the season when the weather typically improves.
Good luck out there and let us know how you do.

Re: weather for Newport Fri and Sat
Usually with a low pressure system comming ashore the winds tend to blow steady throught all hours of the day& night, unlike a high pressure situation, where the wind is calm in the morning, then picking up in the late morning, or early afternoon, Im planning for Newport on Sat. & sw winds are not my favorite, throws the drift out of normal, but I'll be there, & hope for the best.

It's going to be one of those weekends that you just have to be there to check it out.

Re: weather for Newport Fri and Sat
Oooh, Roy, did I ever tell you the story about the 4 hour cruise back from the ranch? And that wasn't even a cross swell/wind pattern.
How about the souwester that blew up while we were trolling around Area 61? 4.5 hours back and the little blue boat was a submarine half the time. That was a wonderful 4 and 5 with an occasional 6 ft swell.... more like 6ft peak
2 hours back? Would have been a wonderful dream
Nice when we went out, but boy was it nasty on the way back. Ask Popeye how the Julie Rose III fared in those conditions. I heard it t'weren't too nice.
Be careful out there, guys!

Re: weather for Newport Fri and Sat
I'm not sure where Roy is heading with only a 2 hour run back to the dock in seas like that unless his boat has grown into something that is haze grey and has a flight deck.

Re: weather for Newport Fri and Sat
Yeah Dog, I'm telling ya... being wet despite full rain gear wasn't a joy. Neither was having a wall of water in the face every 5 or 10 minutes. I look back on that and wonder why I was laughing so hard every time it happened. I guess the alternative wasn't much of a choice.
I'm sure glad that it's looking better for Sat.

Re: weather for Newport Fri and Sat
2 and 7 for saturday looks better????????///
Not for this kid. Canceled my trip over this for tomorrow and saturday and will sit this one out. Last year we went on a 3 and 5 prediction with a south wind to the Pile. I called it after I tried to turn around and motor back over the spot we just got two fish from. Looked at Pop's and said I don't need a fish do you. NOPE! WERE outa here. Was not the funnest trip out there for sure and well, I have better things to do at home than get beat up by an upset ocean.
Good luck to all of you that area going. Hope the forecast is wrong. Beware the south wind.

Re: weather for Newport Fri and Sat
Bernie, not sure what your looking at.
My post above shows the prediction for saturday.
Although sunday looks aweful and it's got to build up to that sat may be doable if we hurry.

Re: weather for Newport Fri and Sat
Rich I just checked the latest forcast and it is indeed 2 and 7 for saturday with SW wind at 10. Friday is 3 and 5 at 9 seconds with a south wind 10 to 15. NOAA forecast a few minutes ago. Does not sound like fun to me. Better cross the bar at 4 am bro and head out but Harrisons might be a safer bet on a day like that.
AGain good luck to all.

Re: weather for Newport Fri and Sat
SW wind is Nasty...even if it is only 10 knts. And that swell is fairly tight, any kind of wind chop on top of that would be fairly turbulent. I think I'm going to stay local.
Good luck to those who do go. There is no substitute for putting the ol' "hairy eyeball" on her and making the call face-to-face with mother nature.
