Re: prinneville
If I were boatless at Prineville I would consider trout fishing the Crooked River below the dam at least once while I was there. It opens to bait on the 28th and the first 8 miles below the dam are usually really good fishing. If you fly fish or want to give it a try, it's a great spot.

Re: prinneville
The frustrating part about fishing the river is that while it's only a short ways away from the campground as the crow flies, you have to drive about 15 miles back to Prineville and then follow the river back out towards the dam to reach it :depressed:. If you fly fish, scuds (orange) are always a good choice along with blue winged olives or adams etc. If you don't, you'll find a mixed bag of waters that will suit any kind of fishing you're comfortable with, riffles, runs, pools etc.

Re: prinneville
If you're bank-bound, for bass work the channel that's created by Deer Creek and the shore up-rez from it; been veddy, veddy good for me thru-out the years.
The cove next to the dam on the south side is a popular spot for rainbows.

Re: prinneville
The road follows the river and there are about a dozen day use areas and campgrounds to base out of.

Re: prinneville
Bass= Occasionally after a storm, there'll be flotsom pushed into the back of Deer Creek. The LM will hide underneath it. Cast a jointed Rapala parallel to the front of the driftwood and HANG ON. For the channel itself I like to yo-yo a spinnerbait. Wear some polaroids to spot stumps and boulders and work them with a jig'n'pig, T-rigged worm, etc.
Trout=DropShot using a #8 hook buried into half a nightcrawler with the hook 2, 3 feet up from the weight. You'll probably gut-hook a few. If you aren't keeping them, nose-hook with a #4 circle hook. Keep your rod as vertical as the wind will allow; this will keep the worm further up off the bottom.
