Damn good Bull! Cow calling in the early season is deadly.

Nice, both from last weekend? The one on the top should score really well. It would have been a real monster in another year or so, good genetics. I hope my elk hunting area opens back up before season ends. Come on rain!!!!!!!!!

Nice bulls.

Did you bugle them at all, or was it all a cow call show? Did you spot and stalk then use the cow call?

give us some details!!

Nice pictures!! I don't get to go after my elk until the fall hunt on the coast range and my deer at the end of September in eastern oregon, and it really sucks having to wait. I have seen a lot of nice animals this week. So are you going to mount one or both of those? They are definately nice. Great job!

Man, so many questions so little time. I'll describe the hunt in the morning more when I have some time to write, but in short I used a combination of some chuckling and cow calling because both of these bulls were fighting and calling quite a bit in the morning when we were watching them. The chuckle wasn't an aggressive one but enough to get them really interested, then the cow calling opened up the flood gates. I had to let the 5 pt walk 25 yards in front of me to get to the big boy. My buddy shot the 5 pt about 5 min after I shot the other one. But I'll do a better job tomorrow explaining. My itch is over for a few weeks though after 14 hours of packing. I'll explain also the impossible feat of keeping it from spoiling also. God was helping out a little on that end.

Ok, here it is:

We spotted three bulls in the morning in an area that would be impossible to get to quietly so we basically watched and studied their actions and where they went into the heavy timber. The big six and the five point were fighting a lot and making small bugles and chuckles. The biggest bull of the bunch was a 7x8 and he stayed a little out of the fight, but he would bugle and rake trees a lot.

So that evening we set up where we saw them disappear that morning and when the sun started to go down I chuckled and several cow calls. The reply was instant, with a bugle coming from the trees. The fight was on again inside the treeline, but with a couple more cow calls they were tromping towards us quick. The five point came out first and I could see the six behind him. I let the five go 25 yards in front of me knowing what was behind him. The big bull stopped at 40 yards broadside and I peppered him in the boiler room, and he spun around. My buddy cow called and he looked at our direction long enough for me to pump another arrow into him. He dove off the side into the trees after that.

While this was going on the five point just stood in amazement. He stared in our direction for about 5 min. so I cow called a couple of times and he decided to come take a look also. I brought him within 25 yards of my buddy and he peppered him also in the lungs. He only went about 75 yards before dropping. In the end my bull only went about 20 yards over the bank and expired. The first shot went directly into the heart, the second in the lungs. The only bad part of this was two guys for two elk to pack out. It was a long friggn' day.

As of keeping the meat in good condition we had to do several different things. For one we started skinning at 1 am and had all of the meat off the animal before first light. They were put in bags and somewhere in the shade that would hopefully be cool. However, with the changing sun we had to shuffle it around sometimes. We had to get the 5 point out first since he was in the open and would spoil first, and then we moved to the six from there. It was a long day but I was very relieved to see none went to waste.

Working the night shift for food. A labor of love no doubt. Hope the truck wasn't too far away. Night OPS with your petzel headlamp? Love mine.
Now you got a lot more fall to chase fish!

Nice job fella's. You know, the fun part is the stalk and the shot...if the shot was a good one then the work begins. Packing elk (not to mention quartering) is very hard work, but the satisfaction of doing it is an incredible feeling. Your miserable for a while, but once you plop those quarters on the tailgate or back at camp...well, it just doesn't get any better.
I've got a week and a half off starting next Thursday in NE Oregon. Can't wait.

Last night a guy from Eastman's called me and wants to do a story on the hunt. Not sure how that's going to work itself out but could be pretty cool. Turns out that my buddy that shot the 5 pt, his wife works with the writers wife. If you can follow that. Sounds cool but we'll see if it pans out.

I have a winch also dave, but due to the restrictions I didn't want to give them a reason to pinch me. It's open season on bowhunters this year also. And yes, I was the guy who ******* about the closure and still think it's a farse that it's only closed to hunters and no one else out there. Not logging or anything. I was just fortunate that there was a couple of 90 degree turns on the map that made 1/2 of my area legal to be in. I was lucky more than anything.
