Not sure about your age, but if you show up at the classes, pay attention, and practice what they teach you, you'll do fine.

I'm 47 and re-took the class with my son 3 years ago, and I got a perfect score! It was fun and informative for me, even after hunting all these years.

Are you required to complete a hunter safety course in order to purchase a hunting license in the state of Oregon?

If you are under 18 (I think) then yes, you have to show your hunters safety certificate to get a hunting license.

Page 6, Oregon Big Game Regulations 2005:

"Youth 17 years of age and younger must have a Hunter Education Certificate in their possession to hunt anywhere except on land owned by their parent or legal guardian."

It has to be carried in the field.

You can do it on line but I think it is better in the class room you get more interaction. Go to the OFWD page and look under Hunters Safety. Oregon has good programs and instructors. I have attened 4 times, 3 times with each of my kids. Only one hunts but all them grew up in a house full of guns. Good luck my kids really enjoyed the class. On the web page they have the class locations and time of the year.

I took my 11 year-old daughter through in 2003 and I went through it with her.
Even though I have been hunting for 30 years I still got something out of it. They teach the best possible way of doing things, most of which you will never see in the field but it gives the kids a good starting point.
It was fun.
I think our sport would benefit from madatory adult version of hunter's ed which gets repeated every 5 or 10 years. It would get more people on the same page and improve our image with the non-hunting public. A small price to pay for the preservation of the sport we love.

I agree I have been though it 4 times once for me and 3 times with my kids. I have also taken the bowhunters saftey course it should be call archery hunting 101 and for any first time or long time hunters you will learn some thing new. Personaly I think both courses whould be mandatory.

I attended Hunter Edication class with my son last year and we completed the Bowhunter Education course last month. Hunter Ed focused primarily on safety and Bowhunter Ed focused on hunting. As ehunter indicated, new and experienced hunters would benefit from the Bowhunter Ed course!
