I think I have tried most of the calls thinking their is an easier & better sounding intrument out there.
By preference I am a mouth diaphram caller. I like how I have lots of control with the call, and can hit lots of notes. I can either bugle or cow call all with my hands free if need be. A lot of people cant handle the gag reflex, but it didnt take me long to over come it years ago. I prefer the dual latex ones (Carlton call - blue). I have a hard time consistently working the triples and the singles dont give me as good a range or sounds. I usually have 5 or 6 of these with me in a small case. With a diaphram and a grunt tube I can cover a wide range of sounds.
I like the sound of the Sceery cow call. The one you bite and blow. But..... it is a spit trap and seems to work great for 5 minutes and then when the first bit of moisture hits it, wham!! it is done. I have broke 2 of these and doubt I will buy another.
I recently bought a Primos "Hoochie Mama" cow call. It is easy to operate and sounds pretty good. You can adjust it to get several pitches. I think this will be my go to cow call this year. I hope a little rain doesnt foul it (if we get any rain). It has not been field tested yet.
I have never really cared for the bugles with a latex piece attached to the bugle. They work good out of the store, but the first time you have to change out the latex, I can never get them to sound good again. I have seen some newer ones with some sort of silicone rubber type material instead of latex. They look to be an easier change out procedure and getting a decent sound again. My partner packs a Primos terminator and likes how he can change out the rubber piece when it gets fouled.
I really like what a hyper hot type call will do to an agressive bull. I pack both the hyper hot and the primos single lip call. I have never heard an elk make the sound this call produces in the wild, but the bulls seem to like it so I dont have a problem tooting away on it.
What calls do you carry and why do you like it?
