A good friend of mine came down yesterday after class and we hit the woods trying to find a couple lovesick longbeards. We started hunting slowly and took our time calling softly every couple hundred yards. We had been hunting for a while when finally we got an answer from what sounded like one Tom who was pretty close. We closed the distance to with 75 yards using the terrain to our advantage so we wouldnt get busted. We set up a jake decoy and a hen and started calling. Right off the bat we got a response and proceeded to wait for a while to call back, not trying to sounds like an eager hen. With the next series of yelps the Tom cut us off and he was getting close. When the Tom appeared at 35 yards we noticed he wasn't alone. There were 2 longbeards one strutting and the other just feeding along side. They both took there time but made it to within 20 yards and we were both able to harvest nice longbeards. I have never killed a 10 inch beard and this was my friends first turkey.
Both Toms were nice but my buddys was a hog. His bird weighed sported a 10 1/4 inch beard and 1 inch spurs and my bird had a 10 inch beard and 3/4 inch spurs. It was a great way to close out the season.
