Default looking for hunting partners

I'm looking for some new duck hunting partners from the west side this fall. I moved back to boring after 14 years in Hermiston, ya, I know what you're thinking, but i'm back here now. I still hunt around hermiston and the big river, but i'm thinking locally. We shot quite a few birds on the east side over the years, and would consider myself a decent shot and a darned good caller, but i just don't know the area. Maybe we'll trade trips, there some nice areas to hunt in the hermiston area that i know of that are still not overrun with hunters, so let's talk

*** 'on guys, let's not hunt alone. You need witness'es to confirm those wild stories  I'm not lookin to take over anyone's honeyhole, nor will i reveal those that i hunt with. It's just nice to talk when you're sitting in the blind.

No question about that, chummer. I've thought about answering you before this, but I usually hunt early season over on the east side, farther than going back to Hermiston for you. Later in the season I struggle to find a spot to hunt, just like many guys, but still manage to connect with some birds. Last year was really skinny however, and I didn't want to pretend I could put you on a sweet spot when I can't.

I'm really in a quandary this year, since I got a good east-side deer tag for opening weekend of duck season, so I will be hunting horns instead of feathers. I also wonder how many guys are going to trek over east since the west side doesn't open until the next weekend. Hmmmm.

Let's talk about the possiblities some more, either on the board or by email.

Early season has never been much to write home about, usually a fair to good shoot on opening day for local birds in the hermiston area. But i've got better things to do during the first half of the season, like fish! After thanksgiving, birds start moving down with the nasty weather and hunting stays excellent thru the end of the season, provided the weather stays bad, otherwise they sit in the middle of the columbia all day long.

Chummer,
I'd be happy to take you to some of my spots, but I can't promise anything like the Columbia Basin for duck numbers. I normally split my time between the lower Columbia and the Boardman area. This year I'm planning to explore some new spots along the Willamette as well.
Let's stay in touch and see if we can put something together. Usually the numbers pick up in November and things can be decent through the end of the season.

Hey chummer,

I’d like nothing more then to hunt with you some time. Unfortunately I have trouble with jobs and such at this moment. I am hoping this will not be the case when the season comes. I’d much rather be hunting then looking for work. Wish me luck.

You say you’re a pretty good caller. That’s my claim to fame in duckhunting also. I can set a fair decoy spread but I’m better at calling.

I have been hunting the last three years in Saulvie Island pretty exclusively. I did hunt near Russian Island once with fair success.

As you can probably tell by my moniker I’m an eastcoast duckhunter. I hope you won’t hold that against me.

The group I usually hunt with is Cap’n Dan, bateboy, and Mr. Fisherman. They are a good bunch of lunatics to hunt with. But watchout for the night before get together. They like to have fun the night before and talk up a storm.

I’d like to have you join us or maybe we could meet you for a hunt some time.

And watch out for that crazy birdhunter. He still doesn’t know what a Baldpate is.
    HEHEHEHEHE

Good luck!

skein, you'll have to give me an e-mail since yours isn't listed. I know what ya mean when you talk about skinny! last few years have been awful waterfowl-weatherwise, warm and dead calm for the most part, there have been a few nice days, cold and windy, but not many Ducks can wait, go look for a buck, ducks can still wait, go find a bull and fish in between. around thanksgiving, now we can focus on dem dux. Oh! here they come! get down! Quack, Quack! NOW! take'em

Sorry, Chummer, I didn't realize my email address was hidden. I've changed my profile, but you can email me at crottsj@ml.lbcc.cc.or.us

Sounds good to get together later this fall. I'm heading over scouting deer this next weekend and of course I'll throw in my shotgun in hopes of getting some dove and grouse shooting on the 1st.

Let's stay in touch and see if we can't get some fish scales on my boat if you're interested. Like they keep saying, the fish ought to be storming in pretty soon, and I can probably come up with an extra seat....maybe in exchange for a little duck call instruction.

Chummer, We should set something up. Don't believe what baldpate basher says about the dollar I'm much cheaper than that.

Seriously Rick T. and I do some really good hunting together. We both are decent callers as I have been his student for the last three years. The first two years he took my calls from me and even filled one with cement and gave it back. He is quite the hard-core hunter.

Together we have about 9 dz G & H decoys some are flambeaus, two miracle ducks and an assortment of other things. We intend to concentrate a lot on Astoria this year so that we can get away from the Sauvies sky busters club and really get down to the pure form of decoying birds with the calls and spreads. I have about seven Labradors that I show and do hunt test with and my male is awesome for us. If you want we can set up a scouting trip or drink a cold one evening and talk about birds, dogs, shotguns and really, really good beers. Just leave your one-dollar bills home.

Dan!

Wiz, check your e-mail, let's do a float! i'll bring ya a rootbeer

Skein, i've got your e-mail now, we'll hook-up sooner or later

Capin' Dan, down river for dux sounds great, maybe combine it with some razor clamming at long beach this winter. hunting w/good dogs is the best. had to put my lab down 2 years ago :depressed: and did not hunt much last year due to my move. Best dam duck dog i ever saw! She loved to hunt! Broke my families heart. I still get a tear when i think about her. Buried her on the banks of the columbia where we had our best hunts. Many a night she was my pillow next to a camp fire on our islands. Deer island? isn't that on sauvie island? I used to hunt east side a bit, mainly racetrack and gay lake, but that was years ago. G&H's and flambeau's are mine. Good beer and good conversation- I Like

Good bear and good conversation is great but Danny's dancing is SCARY!

Gay lake and Racetrack is where we have done a lot of our hunting too. It's a great WMA but there are too few real duck hunters out there. :depressed:

So we are looking towards Astoria. Unfortunately for me this year you can't take Canvasbacks. I still haven't gotten one of those legally.

Keep in touch. I think we could have some good hunts this year.
