Default New Gun Question

I'm thinking on getting a new Remington model 597 22 long rifle for small game hunting, But I would also like to get Marlin model 880SQ. I would like some info on the two guns and there price and what type of ammo I should shoot and what the group sizes are. I have a ruger 10/22 so, if theres a better gun out there thats at a good price and shoots good let me know.
Thanks

You might look at the new .17
This new caliber sounds very interesting.

yeah i work at gi joes i would say the 597 from what ive read the prob with the .17 is ammo price at 7.50 for 50 rnds.instead of 10 $ for 500 rnds for .22.the 597 has a target bull barrel and is more accurate than the 10-22

Isn't the .17 a remake of the 5mm Rem. ?

The 5mm Remington was a .20cal round. The .17HRM is a necked down .22 WinMag.

I have a Remington 597 in .22 Win Mag, and after I got a Volquartsen target hammer the trigger pull was great and accuracy is a lot better than the average .22Win Mag.

I'm with the folks who suggest getting another caliber, not another .22LR. If you choose the .22 Win Mag 597, aftermarket barrels will be out shortly so that you can have two rifles and two calibers for less than the price of two new rifles.

The Ruger 10/22 Mag is a bulletproof rifle as well, and you will probably be able to find more factory AND aftermarket parts for it.

I have a Marlin 882SSV 22mag and It works just fine for my backyard coyote. Its just that my ruger 10/22 is a very old gun, like one of the first ever made. I'm thinking its about time she gets put up. Time to get out with the old 22 long rifle and in with the new.

The 597's had some magazine problems at first but they seem to have gotten that fixed.

The new .17 travels noticibly faster and flatter than the .22 LR however, as one person pointed out, the cost (and availability) of the ammo is a much different situation.

Ive got a 597. Great gun. very accurate, fun, and low cost for its class.

Like most 22lr autos - you want to find ammo that feeds well - there are a couple of brands /types that are finicky. Also, high velocity in general works good - the shorts, subsonics, shotloads dont always cycle.

In general i like the 597 better than comparables (Ruger most common) however the Ruger has a lot more aftermarket accessories.

I get decent groups - 1-2" at 50yards offhand and in field positions.
Cost - dont shoot anything fancy. regulary $8-10 /500 ammo. Gun cost me about $100 new on sale but i havent seen 'em under $130 since i bought it.

5mm Remington case specs.
Case length 1"
Case diameter .255
Bullet Diameter .203

22 Mag Specs.
Case length 1"
Case diameter .243
Bullet diameter .222

Does anyone have specs on the .17 rimfire?
I still think that it is a 5mm Rem with a slightly smaller bullet diameter.

Check out the CZ line of 22's-- shot one this spring and it was very consistant out to a measured 120 yards on sage rats.

Keta -- the 17HMR is definately a necked 22 Mag-- don't remember the link but the Petersen Hunting web site has all of that--- I really thought I wanted one -- but the ruger is just too pricey -- $409 ---

As for ammo -- CCI mini mags -- burns cleaner -- stay away from petersen and some of the other reall cheap ones -- they will leave a ton of residue---

I had an 880sq and it was great. I could consistiently shoot sub minute groups at 100 yards and it was absolute hell on the sage rats.
