Guys, I see a bear!
Well,
I decided to go bear hunting for the first time this weekend. We hunted in some big country up on the Peninsula and guess what I found after a few minutes of glassing burned out stumps. Yup, a bear. From the time I originally spotted it to when we got it was about 3 hours. This was a true team hunt, and to my partners, "I couldn't have done it without you!"
We were within 35 yards of another bear, heard him breathing and saw him moving trees around. I even went down into the puckerbrush to try and push him to one of my partners. This bear just slipped away.
The shot was 343 yards, per my range finder. The longest shot I ever took. The hide was in great shape, no thin spots, and just a touch of gray. The bear weighed just over 165 cleaned out, so we estimate he was about 210. Nice boar, thanks Mr. Bear.
I just got done butchering, so now I have to drop some meat off for the McCleary Bear Stew, and get some sausage made. Might even get another tag.
Andy
Oh yeah, a few pictures.

Re: Guys, I see a bear!
Nice work! Would you be willing to share the location with your Oregon ifish buddies? I'm always up for glassing for bears. My taxidermist said that there is a lot of great land for glassing up on the pennisula. I am definitely interested.
Keep your powder dry,
Mark

Re: Guys, I see a bear!
Any spot in the woods north of Lake Quinault up to Clallam Bay. Every spot we went out we saw plenty of sign. Look for poop with lots of berry seeds, then find a clearcut and start glassing.

Re: Guys, I see a bear!
I have no advice for Oregon, sorry. Try looking in the harvest reports for years previous, if Oregon posts them. Washington does, and that was one of our deciding factors on where to go. If the unit had 1 bear taken versus another that had 50+, I'd go to the unit where 50 lucky hunters bumped into a bear.
Peri,
Yes it was with my b-day camera, and I am still on the original set of batteries. The drag was 80 yards uphill and then 3/4 of a miles downhill. We dressed the bear in three elk game bags, the real stout ones, and walked it out whole. I am still sore today. The shot was taken at about 1:30pm and I got to my truck about 5pm.

Nice job on the bear!!
Do you have to harvest premolars and reproductive tracts on bears in Washington?
I received my envelope in the mail today from ODFW asking for a premolar, and the reproductive tract from females of any harvested bears. I think I could find the molar, but that reproductive tract I send it might end up being a small intestine or maybe a gall bladder or ...... (Forget sending in the gall bladder they are worth a fortune over seas )

Nice blackie!!!!!!!
There are some great spots near Detroit lake in NFS land, and near Gates in Marion county. Also across the river into Linn Co. up towards monument peak.

Re: Guys, I see a bear!
We just have to send in the pre-molar.
Moneyfisher 95. I did a quick look at the odfw website and they do have the harvest stats for black bear in 2000. Check them out and that should give you a place to start.

Re: Guys, I see a bear!
Nice bear. Good job. Hey, weren't you the one looking to learn how to tie jigs? Ever learn? Send me an email. I'll be making a few trips your way. Heading down to my Dad's property on that little river in Monte  !
Have any bear left? Fur wise? Always looking to pickup bear hair. Makes good wings on flies.
Let me know if you're interested. Get you on the tying bug in no time.

Re: Guys, I see a bear!
I am having a rug made from the skin, but I will ask the taxidermist to save the s***** for you. I don't want to trim it incase I screw sometyhing up. Love to learn to tie those jigs the right way. I can tie them, but they just don't look as pretty as the ones you buy.
