12 ga. slugs
Looking for info on using slugs for deer.
What are the ranges they are effective, which type to use, which choke to use ?

Re: 12 ga. slugs
If your shotgun does not have a slug barrel,
spend some time shopping for slugs designed for choked barrels. Sending a slug down a tightly choked barrel could cause you some grief.

Re: 12 ga. slugs
I use federal 3" mag rifled slugs. Shoot them through a modified choke. They do tend to drop off rapidly after 75 yards or so, and they can be rough on the shoulder if you intend to do alot of shooting.

Re: 12 ga. slugs
Does anybody have any info about aftermarket rifled slug barrels? I have a Mossberg 835 Ulti-mag 12ga which comes with their "Accu-mag" barrel wich cannot shoot slugs. It can, however, shoot 31/2" shells. I have killed three deer with 31/2" buckshot loads, but still thinks slugs would be more effective. I took two deer at 30 yds and the other at about 70. Each time thebuckshot loads dropped the deer within 50yds. I have heard that with a good rifled barrel and the right slugs, 100+ yard shots are possible. I live in the Battle Ground unit so I hunt with my shotgun quite a bit.
Any info would be appreciated, Thanks

Re: 12 ga. slugs
A 12ga 1oz foster slug in a standard 28" M barrel is good up to 50 yds in my book. I wouldn't shoot them in anything but a CYL choke if you have tubes. I've taken deer with these, and they are effective, but spend the time to study where your gun shoots. Sabot slugs in rifles barrels with sights designed for them are good out to 100 yds, maybe further.

Re: 12 ga. slugs
Is a CYL more open than a skeet choke?
Never seen a CYL choke.

Re: 12 ga. slugs
You can find a used slug barrel for most shotguns by going to hoosiergunworks.com. Check under shotgun barrels. I got a used rifle sighted barrel for my 835 last year and took an elk with it on October 7th at about 10 yards. My barrel was $85.
Full chokes and looser are fine for foster style slugs (the cheap ones you get 5 for $2.50), sabots and Brennekes don't squeeze down to the choked bore well and may cause some.
I feel comfortable shooting out to 100 yards with sabot rounds, and my best luck was with the Federal hydrashok sabots or the Lightfield impact discarding sabots in 3.5". The Brenneke 1 3/8th oz slugs printed tigh groups, but shot lower.
Best of luck.

Re: 12 ga. slugs
Dogfish, I can shoot the cheaper 1oz. slugs with no damage to the barrel using say a modified choke ? Dogfish, how do you sign up for the AHEC hunts? Understand it is to late for this year but lookin at next year. Never hunted big game before so it's all new to me.

Re: 12 ga. slugs
Do not get yourself a rifled choke, they are no good, you would be better off with a smooth bore with a mod choke with foster slugs. Remington just came out with some new sabot slugs. They are the New Premier Core Lokt Ultra Boned Sabot Slug . 385 grain sabot slug, 12 gauge 2 3/4 inch load with 1900 fps at muz and they shoot 2.4 inches high at 100 and dead on at 150 yards. They cost alot, but are good for the down and diry hard core deer hunter, there the round to go with. If you are going to keep with the smooth bore I like the Winchester 12 gauge3 inch with 1760 fps velocitey and they are 1 oz slug. My first deer I killed with a shotgun I use the Federal classic rifed slug, 12 gauge 2 3/4 inch load and 1 oz slug. They go 1600 fps at muz. Most all foster type slugs are dead on at 50, and they do start to drop good after 75 yards, but they still pack a puch. Get a rifled barrel!

Re: 12 ga. slugs
Kaus,
Foster slugs from a modified gun should be just fine.
Contact the WDFW office near Fred Meyer in Vancouver for the AHE program, they will have the info. It is great for special hunts for elk, and now deer on some of the islands in the Columbia. You can also draw for late season goose hunts that run in to March.
The Remington slugs are good, so are the Hornady H2K slugs that use Hornady XTP rounds, 300 grainers.
I prefer the fully rifled barrels. They just work better with all slugs.

Re: 12 ga. slugs
Kaus,
Sorry, I should have stated IMP CYL. I don't think I've ever seen any tubes in CYL (no choke) either. Skeet tubes would be fine. My only point was that if you have screw in tubes, shooting foster slugs with a tighter choke is hard on the tubes and barrel. If it's a fixed choke barrel, I wouldn't have any issues shooting foster slugs in any choke.

Re: 12 ga. slugs
Kaus,
Slugs are deadly on deer; I don't think you need to get too fancy with loads, guns, etc. Pick a load, learn where your guns wants to put it, and stick with the close-range shots. Mossberg boasts 3" groups to 100 yards with their rifled barrels, but I expect most common slugs ought to work out to 50 with most smooth bore guns. Still gotta be safe - most slug loads still have a range of about a half mile. Good luck and have fun!
Oh yeah, a CYL stamp generally means "Cylinder Bore," or no constriction. The tube is the same dimension as the barrel, usu. about .729" for 12 ga. depending on the manufacturer.

Re: 12 ga. slugs
I once shot a small buck at 15-20 yds with OO buckshot and hit with 4 pellets. Didn't even knock him down but disabled the deer enough to get another, killing shot. Now I hunt deer with my 870 and a Hastings Paradox rifled slug bbl. It has good iron sights and is very accurate out to about 75 yds. I use standard 2 3/4" 1 oz. factory slugs and they work fine.

Re: 12 ga. slugs
check into sabots
12ga is 72 caliber, now take a 50 caliber sabot and push it out with a charge made for a 72 caliber shell. Its a little bit of a boost and will hit very well at 100 yards.
invest in a slug barrel.
