Special Permit Hunt drawing results are out!!
Hey folks,
The results are in for Washington! Check here by typing in your WILD ID number and find out if you drew you special hunt permits.
I drew both my Mule deer and my elk tags. That makes 4 elk tags drawn in 5 years. The Master Hunter program is worth the effort!
How did you guys do?
Andy

Re: Special Permit Hunt drawing results are out!!
I got the Raymond B elk tag!!! It is a late season cow hunt from December 16-31. The hunter success from past years has been excellent in this unit so I am very excited   Does any one have any info on this hunt or knowledge of places to start? This is my first elk tag, so I am pretty excited

Troutguy,
I have a few clients with land in that area and know the area somewhat well. Send me an e-mail and I might be able to point you in the right direction.

Cannot believe it I drew one of the once in a lifetime Moose tags in Wash. Guess I will have to go up North the next month to scout the land. Never been that part of northern Wash but my partner says we will go get one.

Dogfish - You stated that the master hunters program, has paid off with getting tags. Are you talking about Oregon or Washington? The master hunting program description in Oregon only says you will be given preference for hunting private land in the Alsea unit, it makes no reference to any other preference for getting tags except the emergency hunts which who knows where they will pop up at.

Re: Special Permit Hunt drawing results are out!!
BOE,
I am in Washington, and have drawn 4 cow tags in 5 years and filled the first three. The unit I drew is about 10 miles from my house and has the largest of three local elk herds (over 250 last year). This is a private land hunt in the Chehalis river valley in open pastures. Before you think it is too easy, try sneaking up on a heard with 500 eyes looking for danger. Then again, all my elk have been taken out whole.
I have also been drawn for 5 Late season (February and March) goose hunts.
The reading and volunteer work was rewarding, and the shooting test was fun. The written test was a challenge, but I got a 98% on the first pass through.
Give it a shot, in Washington at least. I know nothing about the Oregon program.

Re: Special Permit Hunt drawing results are out!!
Dogfish - I checked into the master hunter program here in Oregon the last couple of days and have no desire to go thru the program.
First you must do some home study that takes between 12 and 15 hours, then a 4 hour classroom session with a 50 question test, then you must take a shooting profeciency test, then 20 hours of volunteer work in an approved program.
After completing all that you are eligible to apply for 1 of 4 hunts that only master hunters can apply for. Two hunts are elk and 2 are deer. None of these 4 hunt areas interest me as they appear to be hunts in what I would call farmers fields. If a person was interested in hunting some private ground in the Alsea unit that is the other possible reward as only master hunters get access to this private ground. And the last possible benefit is to maybe get a shot at an emergency hunt. You put your name in for a county you wish to participate should an emergengy hunt come up. An extra tag would be nice if you got an emergency hunt, but the odds of receiving one of these hunts appear to be small and they are on very short notice.
A person gains no preference in the standard hunt draws. So after looking at what I may receive as a reward for jumping thru the hoops none of the benefits are good enough for myself, for the troubles it would take to achieve the certificate. I would probably learn something in the class but I have no idea what material the class study portion covers.
I felt the shooting test looked a little lop sided for toughness. All targets are 8 inch in diameter and you must score 4 out of 5 hits to pass the test. All shooting is done unsupported, either standing, kneeling or sitting. Rifle at 100 yards, muzzleloader at 75 yards, pistol at 40 yards, and bow at 25 yards. Of all those test I would rather shoot the bow at 25 yards, I would hope my arrows wouldnt be outside a 2 (maybe 3) inch diameter group. The bow test at 25 yards looks disproportionataly easy, yet none of them would be to hard to obtain. Offhand shooting at an 8 inch target at 100 yards would be tough for some people as most are accustomed to bench shooting. Most hunting rifles of the ordinary weekend hunter probably only achieve a 2 inch diameter group off the bench with factory ammo. When they standup and sway in the wind I would think the 8 inch target gets pretty small out there.
I am sure it is a great deal for some people, but the hunts I could obtain with a masters certificate do not interest me. Thanks for sparking my interest enough to check it out.

Re: Special Permit Hunt drawing results are out!!
BOE, I got the materials for the OR master hunter program a couple of years ago and have'nt been able to get past the first chapter or two. From what i have read it seems to be mostly hunting safety and ethics. You're right not much benefit for the trouble.
I'm starting to get real anxious, ~5 weeks to go!!
