I have one of the Penn 955's and one of the 965's. I love them both. Before I bought them, I had a shimano Calcutta 400. That was trash compared to the Penns. I would recommend going with the lever drag model for your purposes.
For that kind of money you could have yourself a very nice Avet (also made in USA), for less money. Sweet reels. Very smooth. Check out their web sight. Do a google search for Avet. You'll see what I mean.
Good luck on that.

for both uses, I'd say the penn 320 is good for the money.

I have fished 975s at buoy 10 for three years now. They are very good. I have 400s and fish them, the 320s are too big for trolling unless you also want one of those old white rods to go with it!

Penn 975. Get the lever drag for another 50 bucks. Stout reels, nice to fish with and won't let you down. Or if you don't need a levelwind look at the Avet reels. They are top grade American products too, for an incredible price.

Use Calcutta 400s and 700s, work great. Use my 320s, 330 and 400H for peelers and hali's.

I've got a Penn 965 and it's the best reel I own. I have a Calcutta 251 and like it a lot too. The Penn 975 lever drag is the most popular reel down in Baja for light line fishing. That is a pretty big endorsement considering the environment (salt water) and the species being fished for down there.
