Ivory Billed Woodpeckers are not Extinct!
I just heard that this morning on NPR. They found some in Arkansas. Best news of the year, IMHO.

Have you seen their cousins out here in the PNW? They are called Piliated Woodpeckers.
Looks nearly identical, makes one heck of a racket too.
We have several around the WSU Campus at Salmon Creek in Washington

I used to have a pair of pileated woodpeckers in a willow thicket in my pasture in Blodgett. They look like flying dinosaurs.

We have pileateds that take advantage of the habitat trees I have near my house...... they are awesome critters and have incredible strength and tough bills.
The wood chunks just fly when they get to "thump, thump, thumping......"

It is great news, imagine that, protecting habitat can actually work. Greg Walden is probably having a very bad day thinking his ESA gutting is going to get tougher.

Talk about tough....a couple weeks ago while fishing on the MC, we heard this VERY loud woodpecker. Turns out it was a Pilleated pounding on a tubular steel pasture gate!
