.....a Deer or Elk, and you're only a few yards away from it. Lets say you blew out the shoulder. How do you rapidly and humanely finish it? Pop it in the head, lungs, use a side arm or what?

Back of the Head, although low if I want to save the horns in one piece.
However, several years ago my wife shot her first buck bigger than a fork. A nice four point, first shot through the right front shoulder while it was bedded. I heard the second shot while I was high tailing it over to where she was. The animal was still alive when I got there so I dispatched it with a shot behind the head. She had already applied the "kill" shot when it was down but she was so excited she just shot it in the front shoulder again. Luckily it was the same shoulder as the first shot.

I used to always give a shot to the head until I had one ricochet off a rock under the head.
Scared the living s_ _t out of me.

Now I stand back aways further. Unless I feel I can safely cut the throat.

I've found a close rifle shot to the base of the skull ends it quickly and makes removing the skull from the spine easier too. I'm too lazy to pack a side arm while I'm hunting steep stuff.

:grin: If you don't have a tag to harvest an Elk or Deer with a hand gun it is unlawful to finish off either with a hand gun. :depressed:

I believe now that there is no longer a hand gun only hunt on the Oregon books you can legally take big game with a hand gun in any center fire season.(sp) As long as it is of "legal calliber".
On a side note it is technically illegal to have a center fire fire arm in possession durring a big game season with a filled or no tag durring a open rifle season. I am not sure how it stands with rimfires.

Anyway..... this is how I understand the handgun thing.

Oh, by the way I vote for back of the head at the base of the skull.

Ahh...but there is nothing like the bullwinkle shot to the front of the skull. It sure makes the horns easy to tie to a pack. :grin:
