Default I\'m Getting a New Toy

In August I will be receiving a brand new in the box Remington 700 Sendero in 7mm Ultra Mag. It has been a long long time since I have hunted with a firearm. I have spent the last 15 years flinging sticks, so I have many questions.
Has anyone had any experience with the 7mm Ultra Mag?
Do any of you know what the ammo availability is for this fine shooting instrument?
Is the only over the counter ammo available the Remington made 140 grn Soft Point Core-Lokt, 140 grn Nosler Partition and the 160 grn Nosler Partition?
What is the best ammo to use to send death scream'n 'cross the canyon?
Any idea on when reloading dies are going to hit the market?
Fish Hunter has a process for breaking in a new rifle – any comments on breaking in a new gun?
Any help would be appreciated.

Nookie Monster,

Get in touch with me before you buy some ammo. I've got a box of160 ultra mags that I can't use. Be happy to give them to you. Should be a great gun. Congrats.

The 160 Partitions should serve you well.As far as breaking in a barrel,I go against the gun nut grain.I think it's a waste of time.Lotsa people do it.It is terribly time consuming with minimal return. If tinkering with stuff turns your crank, then go right ahead. If your time is limited like mine, clean and oil the thing before you put it away for any period of time(more than 1 month).RCBS should have dies now if not, soon.Do not let the barrel get hot(more than 7 or 8 shots before letting it cool down til the mirage from the barrel dissappears. ).This will help the life of the tube as much as any break in and takes very little time.Saves on ammo too.Remember to practice with your new rig before you"send scream'n 'cross the canyon".Go ahead and shoot at long renge at paper and practice by dry firing til the cows come home. Then you will be much better prepared to hit at long range than 97%of all other hunters.
Good Luck.
Mark.

Isn't a Sendero a long heavy barreled rifle.
Long heavy barrels are good for stand hunting and when you don't have to be in a big hurry,,
BUT if you plan on sneeking through the forest (pussyfooting around) long heavy barreled rifles are a pain to pack around, I HAD both and after a long day of packing a long/heavy barrel I get very very tired. Light short barreled rifles swing faster on game and are a lot more fun to pack and since you aint going to shoot more than a couple of rounds at a deer or elk they are able to do the job just fine.
I like your choice of the 7 mm Mag a very very fine choice. I use a pre 64 .264 Win Mag. it has a 26 inch barrel But its not a heavy barrel, and I use a .300 win Mag with a 24 inch barrel. But if I could get the wife to let me use Her .243 in a Winchester youth ranger I would pack it for deer but not elk, fits me like a glove ,right pull short barrel and will put the first 4 rounds in a 3/4 inc h group at 100 yds. after that it goes to about 1-1/4 group till the barrel is to hot.
I do my own loading and have loads that give me speed plus accuracy. Enjoy the new rifle .
Rember this hunt with the rifle you feel the most comfortable with .338 mag to a 22-250 or what ever , if you feel confident with a certian rifle you are more likely to hit your target with it .
If you are going to use a scope ,get the best one you can aford. Have fun with the new one.
Opinions are like belly bottons every body got one. and that is my opinion $.02 worth.

Nookie Monster,
I am a firm believer in breaking in a barrel. Dan Lilja, a custom barrel maker from Montana and one of the top benchrest competitors in the country has break-in and cleaning instructions on his website.

Lilja Rifle Barrels Break-in Procedures

I have used this method along with Butch's Bore Shine on all of my bench guns. Proper break-in will help guard against some serious copper fouling down the road.

Good luck with the new toy.
